dunno about that man, i've seen some amazing DJs who keep me on the dancefloor all night long like a bass puppet! theres a definite art to playing records - and a reason some of these artists have such a magnetic pull.Abs wrote:Yeah it's all about playing live, infact it angers me to know that all these people we pay money to see are just playing records.. we're paying to see some guy simply play tunes that we allready have and can listen to anywhere.. and dont give that 'but theyre playing dubz!!11' shit, it doesnt matter if the lyrics or beat was slightly changed, it's still just a record that anyone could be playing.

And yes, I think it's awesome. Badmen/women.
I think she just djs on ableton, unless she is doing something different now.
Interesting, I am in a group that utilizes live instruments, bass, midi drum kit, guitar, synths. Its 2 people. Fun stuff.thiswayup_agency wrote:Any live acts here on dubstepforum would like to get in touch, we're implementing a live act roster this year, so looking to review acts.
Please email bookings@twuagency.co.uk and cc mattd@twuagency.co.uk with as much info, music and video as possible ideally we're looking Instrument based.
Big Up!
This Way Up Artist Agency.
Would like to see more of this happening. Or even more true live PAs
Absolutely loved Bass Clef's set at glade this year. The first time I'd seen him!ajantis_art wrote:bass clef is a joy to see live, good to see someone bringing a different approach and having so much fun, definitely rubs off on audience.
and yeah shiva's mixes are just brilliant
I'd love to get involved playing in a live dubstep pa, instrumentally anyway.

With the exception of maybe 2 people listed here, when you read "Live sets" that is what people are talking about. She doesn't just DJ with Ableton, but deconstructs and edits tunes in the mix. So she's using a DAW as a modern day sampler, jacking whatever beat, bassline, melody, editing, looping, warping, etc...collective wrote:Surface_Tension wrote:DON'T FORGET SHIVA.

I wouldn't call it DJing at all, tbh... not to slight DJ's, as I am one--but I'd rather hear her or Phaeleh "DJ in Ableton" than most trainwrecking DJ's out there. All that matters is the end result, IMO.

I wasnt knocking her man, I know who shiva is and I know she is talented. I was just saying don't say she is a live pa.Surface_Tension wrote:With the exception of maybe 2 people listed here, when you read "Live sets" that is what people are talking about. I am sure she would agree, and I am sure you could ask her.
Thanks for the info though I won't be confused by people calling someone a live pa again. Just a force of habit I assume. Of all the genres I have played dubstep by fun is the most fun to perform while doing a live pa.

Im really liking explorations of mixing live instruments with heavy beats and bass. There is something special about hearing music performed live in front of you, whether its using traditional instruments or laptops as it has the potential to never be the same twice and is influenced by the atmosphere of the night. Bass Clef is ace live!!
:cheeky plug: Jazzsteppa are performing live at Lab in Bristol at the end of the month, along with Forsaken and Ben Blackmore doing a live set with new material, as featured on MAH's Bristol Rise Up show.

The Spit Brothers
Cool thread, I play in a dubstep band with my production partner Dubsworth called the spit brothers. We've done shows with Caspa and Rusko, Matty G, Kush Arora, Antiserum, Roommate, DZ, DJ G, MRK 1, Kromestar, Plastician and many others. We have a track on Full Melt's BAD vol.2 and have done collabs with Kush Arora, Antiserum, OSC, and have a bunch more stuff on the way. We use instruments (guitar, bass, trumpet, organ, v-drums) along with laptops to really capture the sound of the club as well as that great indescribable live thing. I really hope more people start approaching club music this way. (I freaking love djing too).
CHECK OUT THE SPIT BROTHERS
Oh yeah, we are currently looking to book shows in the UK this summer. We've already been in contact with some promoters, Anyone else feel free to get in touch with us. booking@thespitbrothers.com
