Yeah, it's always a minority of the ethnic minority that's being a dick about these sort of things, and usually, there are much larger numbers of people who aren't minorities who make a big deal out of it.
I live in the Netherlands and most minorities here don't care about such subtle things that may be perceived as racism if you try really hard but really aren't (I actually am a cultural minority since I'm half Greek), it's the worthless politicians who try to get on a moral high horse and then make an issue out of it.
It does more harm than well. There's an "anti-discrimination law" in this country, and it has backfired a lot more than it has actually HELPED cultural relationships. At least 30% of all students at my previous school had to be minorities, so a lot of non-minorities were declined to keep the number right, which, when it comes down to it, is discrimination against majorities. But for some reason that's ok.
Or minorities getting away with things that majorities don't. It's really bad in some parts of the country and it sadly turns some people to nationalistic parties such as
The "Freedom" Party.
People really don't get it.
It is BAD when the government sees in colors. A person should be judged for his or her actions, not culture, not upbringing, not appearance, not skin-color, but actions. It IS bad when the government makes exceptions for minorities, because THAT is discrimination against majorities and it tenses up racial relations. It IS bad when the government refuses to let people live in this country for having a certain religious or racial background because it reduces people's individual freedoms to live the life they want without harming others or their rights.
I am actually against anti-discrimination laws. I personally would never discriminate against people, ever. But who is some dude in the government to say who can or can't shop in some racist bigot's store? I mean, if some racist ass motherfucker doesn't want Middle Easterners in his or her store, for whatever reason, that sucks, but who am I to say who that store owner can or can't refuse, anyway? It's his/her store, not mine. The store owner would only be losing customers so who gives a shit?
Of course, everyone just wants to increase the size of the government. "The government fucked up, so the answer to that problem is MORE government". BAAH.[/url]

I disagree about Ethnic Minorities, or even Minorities in general being the ones to play the race card. Usually it is excessively liberal guilt types, who are trying to make reparations for slavery, or raping Native Americans, etc... which was completely a shit thing to do, don't get me wrong.
It comes down to this: You have a legal right to be a racist. You might be a piece of shit, but near as I can tell there is no law against that. You might pay for it by getting the piss beat out of you though. I recommend a live and let live strategy for those you disagree with.

big up mate proper good points there
racism/non-racism is learnt not taught. kids are gonna have to meet someone from another cultural background and realise for themselves that they are human beings and should be treated equally.

Yeah, there are more non-minorities who make a deal out of it than minorities, since minorities have figured out that it's counter-productive a long time ago.

Exactly. You cannot FORCE people to do the right thing, people should be free to disagree with what is 'right'. People should be free to be assholes to whoever they want for as long as they don't limit other people's rights or hurt them.
People have such selfish views, they don't get that by trying to force their tolerance to intolerant people, they are being intolerant to intolerant people. It's really fucking funny.
If it were up to me, Mein Kampf would be legally sold and people would be allowed to walk around wearing swastika shirts, praising Hitler. I have the right to disagree with their views, and I do and I find their views hateful. But freedom of speech shouldn't be limited to things people WANT to hear.

One of these threads isn't complete without an apocrphyal Voltaire quote:
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Abuse of political correctness only breeds contempt between races IMO.

Just dont allow it to change your life thats all. If some people want to pussyfoot about things the rest of their life watching what they say in case it offends someone then let them.
Personally i dont give other peoples thoughts a say in the matter when i say things - i know that i'm not fascist in any way shape or form so when i make a joke about someone because theyre black/fat/ginger/welsh/bald etc it means nothing more than just the joke i intended. I absolutely refuse to allow political correctness stop me laughing at things i want to laugh at.

political correctness is basically a tool for middle class white people with too much time on their hands to make themselves fell better.
'hey i might not be too happy if my daughter brought home a black boy for dinner but at least i'm contributing to equality by changing the words of a nursery rhyme'.
tbh though i'm always a bit dubious about stories like these, they always seem to do the rounds in the daily mail etc. and 9 times out of 10 they get proven to be false/grossly exaggerated.

I made the mistake once of calling someone a tnuc, and a rather big feminist slapped me down for it. And if it wasn't for having said it and being slapped down, I might not ever have seen the error of my ways. I wouldn't have known WHY it would be offensive to women to have something that they are born with used as a derogatory term.
Like for instance, calling something gay, when what we really mean is that it is BAD in some way. How would you feel if we substitute your name instead of the word GAY? Like that's so Surface Tension. Obviously it would piss you off. Not the first time, maybe not the second time, but over time it would grate at you to the point of wanting to knock the next person who does it out.
So my point here, is that sometimes it is better for people to make a mistake so that they can learn from that mistake. I learned that what I said was actually pretty offensive to a good friend of mine. Imagine if I'd have said something like that TO them instead of about someone else. When it is government sanctioned, I have a huge problem with it for the same reason. People think it's stupid, and so they make it a point to go against the government action, which they might even agree with if someone explained it to them.
Like BLACK SHEEP:
The definition is pretty clear. A black sheep is a member of the group/family regarded as a disgrace, an embarrassment, a ne'er-do-well, the odd man out. The phrase arose in the late 18th century, probably from an older proverb, "There's a black sheep in every flock."
Black sheep, in those balmy pre-industrial days, were not as valuable as white sheep. None of the sources was explicit, but I presume white wool could be dyed into any color while black wool was more limited. Thus, the black sheep was the unwelcome oddity in the flock.
A similar term is bĂȘte noire, which is French for "black beast" and means something disliked or feared.
In European thought, the use of "black" is often associated with the devil, wickedness, and bad things in general: a black cat crossing your path is bad luck, etc. Probably this arises from black as the color of mourning, at least as far back as Rome in the second century AD, which likely borrowed it from the Egyptians. In the early days, it was thought that the body contained four humors/fluids that determined one's physical and mental qualities: one of the four humors was black bile, associated with melancholy, sadness, depression.
Clearly racist, not.
Some of this shit goes way beyond. At a certain point it must be said, at least in the United States, there is a Freedom OF Speech, not a Freedom FROM Speech. Freedom OF Religion, not a Freedom FROM Religion.
That goes for pretty much everything in this country. When Atheists want to remove prayer from School's... like to the point where a religious student isn't allowed to pray before they eat, before school at their flag pole, etc... that is just weak. Now the issue of whether or not a teacher can lead an entire class in prayer is valid. Whether a teacher can lead other religious persons in prayer is protected. But people cannot grasp the concept that someone else has rights that may offend you. My advice to them is to get over it.
Unless the behavior is directly responsible for a violation of your rights, then you have nothing to say on the matter of their right to do it. Live and let live.
