if you cant hear what you're doing (cheap monitors that really aren't able to play sub bass etc.) then every things gonna sound fucked when you play it on a good system. i know this from experience! so yes, a decent pair of monitors is extremely important imo

The exact thing what what I'm talkin' bout.
Be honest, do you need "accurate" monitors for yourself, because you're one of the only people who have those "accurate monitors." If someone goes and listens to your song on some ipod speakers, then they won't have the advantage of accurate monitors, so what's the point? Your mixes are always gonna sound different.

If you can make it sound good on accurate monitors that have a flat response and do not colour the sound coming out of them, then any set of speakers that you play it through will show up their flaws rather than your music making ability. In theory atleast

This thread is silly. You don't NEED good monitors/headphones but you WANT them trust me.

michael brauer, who's mixed some of the biggest tunes in america, ever (Luther Vandross, Pattie LaBelle, etc), has an absolutely stunning rack of gear. i mean 1176's like there's no tomorrow, fairchild limiters that go for $30k a pop EACH these days, a gigantic SSL to mix on...
monitors through a sony boombox. it works for him.
then again, it's not like he'd build shitty mixes on a pair of genelecs.
same goes for Breakage-- man understands the ins and outs of what he's hearing.
if something works for you, really works for you, awesome.
if you don't know, then you should mix on anything and everything you can. ignorance does not a decision make.

Well I suppose in an ideal world, we would all have amazing $5000 monitors and $4000 headphones, but to be honest, you really could do fine without.
My point is, you can keep buying loads of expensive equipment, but your actual music probabaly won't be getting that much better.

I disagree with that. My music not only got a little better (mixdown wise) but I was more motivated to write. I just upgraded cans and the level of detail is just amazing. Honestly I didn't realize how much that would help me but especially in dealing with the low end, they are a god send. You really aren't going to understand any of this shit until you have spent significant time with a good set of monitors / cans so please stop chatting about shit that you know nothing about or just keep it up because it is entertaining.
You don't need to spend 1000's of dollars either. Spend 300 to 500 on an upgrade and your quality of life will increase.
