why aren't we more like the french?
because if we became more like the French, they would change so as to be not like us.

Because your cheddar thing makes you think about cheese when we just call it by its true name : modified plastic.

American Cheddar ruining the Brits reputations again! I had some Cheddar in my fridge the other month that you could smell from the next room.

Also, are the French the best smokers in the world? I've rarely met anyone that can outpuff a Frenchman. I once sat in a pub in Shepherd's Bush watching a rugby match with my friend's French housemate. During the course of the game, he got through pretty much an entire packet of Gaulloises and a bottle of red wine, leaving all the butts on the floor and then triumphantly exiting at the final whistle.

It was pretty fucking impressive, especially seeing as I was sat nursing an orange juice and lemonade after a rather ruinous night out.

i hear what your saying re. being more like the french in terms of proactively getting out on the streets and doing something.
the best example of this (aside from the current things) was when disillusioned youths from all over the country started burning cars etc in there estates every night (remember?)

why dont we do this?

i think its because english people on the whole don't actually understand what is happening. It's "cool" for kids to be stupid, you don't wanna be a boffin  . so the end result is that they don't then understand problems facing the country etc... and even when they do read something other than the Sun or Daily Mail, they don't grasp what its saying. Like they think its more a novel than fact. They only "follow" what the govt has decreed to be fact.

its a shame and comes down to people educating themselves. the uk seems to have a culture of ignorance :(

the french don't have clamps because when they were introduced anyone that saw one on a car put superglue in the locks, within a few weeks clamps stopped being used (thanks Q.I), we are pussies compared to the french. as for people saying we managed to get active with the poll tax riots, we weren't that active when they slightly changed and renamed the poll tax to council tax. seems the name change was all that was needed to pacify us.

I'm French and glad to have left the country 7 years ago.
Almost everything in this country make me ashamed.

Regardless, I like to think our women like to have a glance over Sarte once in while. Sitting in their local coffee shop, well dressed, chain smoking with a glass of red and talking about the recent elections of the shortcomings of something I can't comprehend. Then when they get home they give you the best shag of your life.

As opposed too, having a glance over Heat magazine once in while. Sitting on a wall outside their local off licence in tracksuits, chain smoking with a 2 litre bottle of cider, and talking about who they voted for off x factor and the shortcomings of having to pay to get on buses if they don't enrol at college for the 4th year. Then going home and giving you a sloppy blowjob in return for the tv for half an hour.

This too, is kind of a generalisation.

why dont we do this?
coincidentally, the 2005 riot broke out when there was a dry spell in the hash market. when there's no money, no work, no other legal alternative, things get sticky and go horribly wrong very quickly. i also think that in the UK there is less geographical segregation. in france, all the immigrants are put in council estates that are out in the suburbs of the city. in the uk, i've noticed that council estates are found all over, inner city, near richer neighbourhoods, etc. people are more mixed this way and the separation is a lot less noticeable. when the riots went down in france, it started in those areas. because they're massive and quite isolated from the centre, it quickly got out of control and the domino effect was much more powerful this way.
also i think the police in france are to blame as well. they only ever show up in response to calls or disturbances. they're defensive and aggressive all the time. here, ive noticed that cops are always walking in the streets. its more preventive, and i think that makes a massive difference.
