You're all just shook. Just because there are different types of hip hop and d'n'b, it hasn't stopped new and intereting types of each music form from emerging.

Naming sub styles of musical genres helps people to locate what they like when they are trying to find new music in that style.

I like fulthy techy dubstep.

Occassionally I like wobblestep & frogstep.

I have to be in the mood for liquid/liftmusic dubstep tbh.

I'm now more secure in the knowledge that my preferences can be pandered to because of my knowledge of various subgenres within dubstep.

I'd be badly dissapointed if I went to see Ohmwerk or Excision live at a dubstep night, and all the played was liquid/liftmusicstep.... :(

Likewise, people expecting roots and dub at a dub night may be offended to hear Monster X at full pelt! -w-

Embrace it, because regardless of whether you like catagorisation, marketing bods, journalists and scenesters are already in the process of deconstructing and labelling every sound they come across!

It pisses me off when people refer to d'n'b/garage/happy hardcore/euphoric trance as techno!

Catagorisation means that we can avoid listening to donk or tectonik and focus on badass, bass filled dubs!

See, this is where labeling fails.

Cause I see what I build is dark .... yet people say its not, cause RAHRAHRAHRHA REESE REESE REESE is dark, evidently? its easier to just say.. "yeah, dubstep" . Saves all the hassle of trying to know what to call something.

yes I agree with Futures Untold

categorization is good

"Darker dubstep"

"Chilled out dubstep"

"Rootsy vibes / reggae dubstep"

these are classifications

where it all goes bad is when we start giving these classifications STUPID NAMES like:

"Goth-Step"

"Stoner-Step"

"Rasta-Step"

"Club-Step"

it's bullshit

I definately feel this. If we dont allow label we create an evolutionary bottleneck with dubstep. If somebody chooses to produce "dub-hop" and then it begins a trend toward production of that style and it continues to evolve into some new genre all together, then in 5 years everyone is saying thank god dub-hop came along so we could have this wonderful new genre. Furthermore... Is dubstep itself not a branch off of Garage? I mean I can understand wanting to hold true to dubstep but at the same time let it take different turns. We can pretty much all agree that most DnB is still really good, but we still make rip clownstep to no end. Without classification we would have clownstep at our hardcore DnB shows.

Don't subcategorise(is that a word?) just add an adjective to describe, when nessesary.

twas it not the dubstep sage Corpsey that stated "Dubstep was Dubstep for about 15 mins in August 2006" around the time of Dubstep Allstars Vol 2

its been fragmented for a couple of years now if you ask me, the question is, does anybody really care?

Sorry to take your quote out of context maybe, but BOLLOCKS tbh.

If you haven't got a name/label/genre id tag for the music you're creating does that mean that it ceases to exist? pfft... :o

seconded.

I'd be pissed if I went to a music store trying to find certain style of music and and the records would be ordered according their name or colour.

There's a reason for categorizing things. It might be a tool for boomkat to sell new burialstep (I hate them btw.. How the fuck can they constantly compare absolutely everything to Burial and get away with it is beyond me) it also might create a bandwagon for people to jump on (be honest, this is happening already without any categories).

For me the reasons for categorizing things are purely instrumental. It's a tool we all use in our everyday lives to clear things and make sense out of the mess around us whether we knew it or not. Why should it be any different when it comes to our musical preferences?

And thanks to the sub divisions in DnB I'll never accidentally buy a Clipz or pendulum-record. :)

Where's the difference? Pairing substantives with adjectives or pairing substantives with other substantives that carry a certain meaning and values? Why is other good and other bullshit?
