Throw in some random sounds,
And with random i mean really random, a cough, klik, opening door and play with it. I do it all the time, helps giving the drums that extra vibe

sometimes it all depends on the samples too, sometimes they just don't blend together - treat Toms (acoustic toms) with a noise gate so you get the right bit of the toms coming through the mix and nothing bleeding through from the recording - same for using breaks too!
