horrible analogies aside, at what point did any of them say they NEEDED to get stoned though?
all they said was they liked to get stoned and listen to music to get inspired.
then someone said thats mostly what they do and you called it the stupidest you've ever seen.
just so you know where i'm coming from i used to smoke daily too from 14 until 25. 7 months ago, i got back from the road and just never bought again. basically just stopped.
lets use your analogy again then, since its better. if you cut out the fact that most sports governing bodies say steroids are bad (they are, thats not my argument), objectively, steroids make you run faster. the goal was to run fast and steroids helped with that. if the goal is to write better music, and drugs do that for you, who are you to tell them its stupid?
there is alot of drug inspired music out there. most pink floyd, alot of the more psychadelic beatles records, etc. etc. etc.
your argument says thats not true creativity.

Kidstatic-
Look, this is going on way longer than it needs to. Especially cos at the end of the day- I don't really care what people do. What I found to be stupid was the idea that doing whatever substance could help someone trying to write music be a better musician.
Yes- there are volumes of great music that were written while completely fucked up on X, Y & Z. I never said it is impossible to write good music while high. Nor did I say getting high would automatically make a good musician bad...
All I said is that if the musician can't be good when sober... then they aren't that good of a musician. End of...

Condolences on being an insomniac... I am one too.
You're in Chicago, right? Look at it this way- only 9 more hours till JB Alberto's start delivering again. That is a bit of a wait tho... hmmm, if you are near Belmont you can always load up on some pancakes at Clarke's.

When Syd Barrett left early on, the rest of Pink Floyd were staunchly anti-drugs. Apart from one who was on coke, but that blatantly wasn't adding much. Maybe the paranoia of The Wall. But that was all Roger Waters' inner demons anyway. I read an article about this recently. Hell, they could be lying.
Taking drugs to be better at music is a bit sad, but the ends probably justify the means in this case. The ends being the music, not the artists' warped sense of reality or tantrums, who cares, it's their decision.
It's pretty difficult to say how much the drugs affected the music anyway. Put a spliff in my hand and I will rather rock back and forth in the dark corners of my mind than give you Sergeant Peppers. The best music is surely written by people with a natural ability (plus hard work?), just as you don't win the olympics on steroids alone.

haha!
since I started the whole "smoke weed all day" thing, I think I should clarify something:
I WAS KIDDING
if you need weed to make tunes you probably need some help
all one really needs is some inspiration like:
a great night in front of a big soundsystem
hearing an awesome banger from a producer that you enjoy listening to
or some good sex
inspiration is everywhere, it's up to you to find it!

Typical of me to think of beats while walking home, usually invent something cool in my head, as I wake up next morning to do it, it's forgotten, should really take a notebook with me.
