Get 'Diadem of 12 Stars' by Wolves in the Throne Room, 'Genevieve' by Velvet Cacoon and 'Autumn Aurora' by Drudkh (and I haven't even named my favorite black metal band and album yet) and until you do any such thing, you are not allowed to have an opinion on black metal.

Black metal is by far the most adventurous type of music metal has had to offer so far. Moreso than Neurosis, or Godflesh or god knows what else. No type of music can have majestic, beautiful melodies and combine them with aggression like black metal can and there is no music that can be as soothing as noisy as black metal is.

To be honnest, black metal sometimes have great melodies and music in general, but the growlings and the attitude generally makes me laugh much more than anything else.

True darkness, when talking about metal, resides in doom/drone/stoner/sludge metal, in my opinion. Nothing better than an Electric Wizard track when I feel a bit nihilistic.

As said Godflesh Fiend, Swans is also one of those bands that can't be compared to anything. They were playing shows in the 80's with so intense volume that some people were throwing off and forced to quit the show.
