The best way to test this is once you think your tune is rolling, but maybe has some mud to it, mute parts of your drums one by one and re listen.
with dubstep this isn't really the case. both 4x4y garage-influenced type basslines and reggae/dub-influenced walking basslines are going to want to hit on the beat a lot, so side chaining is often gonna do you few favours. unless you really want the effect, again usually not too likely in dubstep, it is basically a cop out.

house/techno and other dance genres are kick oriantated.. so yeah mostly theyll sidechain there bassline with the kick. It also gives that pumpin sound. It gets a bit more drive/energy for some tracks.
dubstep is more bass oriantated music. They dont put the focus on grooves or drums. Its bout basslines so they just make more space for the b-line.
