There are plenty of good reasons for working in 24bit when your sound card only does 16, no?
Not trying to go in circles I just wanted to clear up some confusion there.
yea it has it's points, just kinda asinine when it gets dithered before hitting your monitors

Ok so now the circle completes
I don't think it is asinine at all. There is a good reason why most DAW's these days process at 32 bit floating.

There's no guarantees that it will get dithered to 16 bit AFAIK, but then again when do you EVER see a 16-bit only card these days?
Not counting the thread with the dude who just bought a SBLive 5.1 of course.

Actually I was using a Sound Blaster up until last year. It was 24 bit.

Was it? An SBLive? I dunno... all a distant memory. I'd love to get one in and check it out against the Mytek
I remember when the Audigy came out and there was uproar cos it said it was the first 24bit soundcard from Creative. But as it turned out it recorded at 16 bit and then filled the rest with 0s

i use a realtek AC97 based chip, an internal sigmatel stac 92xx on my intel ich8 chipset with ASIO @ 512-1024 samples and unless i'm running a lot of plugins i don't really notice too many overruns, and when i do i just increase the sound buffer
dont give up on internal sound card unless you absolutely positively need to record
otherwise you can use it, i dont see why anyone thinks its shit, it can be done right

Yeah I think I had some form of the Audigy. Trust me I am not recommending anyone purchase it. Thing is when I was doing research on buying an external it seems that a lot of them handled 24bit audio in the same way. Mostly the USB 1 jobbies. There was a large audible difference between the SB and the Audio Kontrol 1 that I use now.
