One great producer once told me that one great producer once told him that panning is like drawing.

When your drawing a picture of for example a house, a car, a stick man and sun shining, you wouldn't draw each one of them on top of each other in the middle of the paper.

House in the center, car in the left side, man on the right side, sun in the right up corner.. or something like that.. right ?

When your panning drums, think the physical positions of a real drum kit.
And think it as a listeners point of view.

I personally think that panning is easier to do with monitors than with headphones, which with you easily pan too much.
