hubb wrote:Doom and Madlib, well .. they are close to being actual enigmatic paradigmes - that change how things are done and the same culd be said for maybe Burial, for his vision and changing the way a lot of people produce. But the rest of what people are mentioning here - has nothing to do with genious - it's just good proper flavor that others can follow.
In my book you can't become a genious for just doing the best beats, the beats I enjoy the most or just having a defined swing - like for example Dilla or Noisia or dBridge.
imo

None of these people can hang with the hendrixes, squarepushers, stevie wonders or mahlers of the past.
J Dilla changed things up big time imo. Sparked a whole new generation of beatmakers. Even Madlib is highly inspired by Dilla.

That's not even an argument or an attempt at disproving a point. That's just grapping at something to disagree with and if you noticed I didn't knock Dillas work in the slightest.
J Dilla changed things up big time imo. Sparked a whole new generation of beatmakers. Even Madlib is highly inspired by Dilla.
What was the change?
I'm not so sure we can give him all the credit with the mpc for example if you look at what other people used at the time.
I fail to see how it's that much more different from a lot of other amazing producers work that I've enjoyed, like Havoc, Notts, 88keys, Premo, or Hi-tek.
It's just a particular flavour, which again.. I enjoy very much.. not hating here.
There are a few reasons why Madlib (not even counting Quasimodo ) is a bit different from those other guys, I think. He has got to the point where he is like a human radio or something -people follow his work and then follow those artists. Ofcourse you can spot a sample or two through another producers work but really it is a bit different. He is not putting rap or mcing on most of his stuff anymore either.
I think I'd actually prefer Dilla over Madlib if I was forced to decide, so it's not that.

60ies had Syd Barrett
70ies had Freddie Mercury
80ies had MJ
90ies had Aphex Twin
if we look a bit closer we even find guys like Jim Morrison, Pierre Schaeffer, James Jamerson, Keith Jarrett, Eddie Hazel, Joe Zawinul, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page. and I'm sure there's dozens of Bachs and Mahlers and Verdis and Beethovens that I never ever heard of because I unfortunately know jack about classical music.

and you guys telling me about Jam City and Wiley and Lil B. fucks sake.

He was a genious when he changed hiphop by being associated to a certain group of people making their own music ? :corndance:
He is without a doubt hugely influential and was amazing but no one can say what the unique genious part is, other than an ability to bring a certain swing.
