Disruption of the prefrontal cortex may also manifest the negative symptoms and cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. As disturbances in working memory, attention and executive functioning are consistently seen in schizophrenics and their healthy relatives, it is proposed that cognitive deficits in schizophrenia are the core of the disorder.
