VAT is basically a sales tax on "luxury goods" that taxes pretty much everything that gets sold, with exceptions like food (mostly) and childrens clothes, and some stuff gets a reduced rate. but it's 15% minimum added on to the sale price of goods in the EU, ours in the UK is 20% now the Tories increased it again. 20 freaking per cent. my god.
