Re: DayZ: An open-world, perma-death zombie survival game
That's minor, i spent all day yesterday getting Arrowhead, woke up this morning and started the Arma 2 download before i left, hoping to play when i came back home. It hadn't finished when i arrived and as soon as it started to extract i get an unexplained "error!" and i have to download it again. 3 hours remaining...

^ Haha, finally managed to get both games downloaded and installed within 30 hours from purchase(28 boyyyy!) but i dont have the patience right now to install the mod, will do tomorrow. Game works beautifully even with Opera and a bunch of tabs + wmp running, played a sniping mission and it was cool. But tommorow i shall begin. I shall.

Re: DayZ: An open-world, perma-death zombie survival game
well i experienced a few of the bugs in alpha with my good char and lost him unfortunately
the first was when your skin changes from bandit to normal you lose your main inventory and weapon and binos/nvgs
so lost my main weapon, binos, ammo, grenades, chemlights etc
so i was forced to run around with a m1911 for quite awhile as i was at the nw airfield and on my way to the devil's castle
the next thing that occurred was after helping out someone (gasp yes up north not everyone is PvP) and killing about 70 zombies with him got patchedc up finally got an ak, ran out of ammo for it, got an m16 and ah back in good shape
so patched each other up and parted ways, next thing i know broken leg so i can only low crawl, the place that had the morphine i needed was up 3 flights of stairs
a lovely glitch low crawling up the 3rd flight of stairs was that i couldn't seem to get to the top floor and just started bleeding each time for no good reason
so patched myself up as much as i could, but had to get the morphine and kept trying and ended up bleeding to death
still had a nice 2 dayish run with that char and only died due to bugs

Re: DayZ: An open-world, perma-death zombie survival game
oh and figured i'd share some tips and tricks from a real life army vet (it's actually come in handy for this game)
http://www.scribd.com/doc/2436983/Army- ... Navigation yea the actual army field manual for map reading and orienteering (had to re-familiarize myself with this and the compass despite owning one) most of the servers i play on don't show your position on the map unless you have gps so this is real handy
always travel in woods when you can for cover, if you have to cross flat ground or an area with little cover move in a zig zag pattern so it's harder for someone to take aim, if you need to stop and say read your map, access your pack, eat whatever, do so in the prone or behind cover
when moving uphill do so at a perpendicular angle, it let's you move faster than just hitting it straight on, pretty much a no brainer for anyone who has hiked or tken on a steep hill
if it looks like a trap, it probably is a trap AKA a tent in the middle of the road or in the open if you must approach it low crawl if there is cover, if not you could risk it, but check all spots a sniper could be (towers etc) this is when binoculars or in soe cases the sight on a sniper rifle (some have better magnification than the binos) come in handy
clear rooms/buildings before grabbing loot, there's plenty of vids/manuals on tactics and squad formations to do this and how to move if you look online, and believe me it comes in handy in this game
if you see a flare, someone was just there, chemlights on the other hand last an hour so you should still be cautious, just not as much so
if you have no map, this game uses a real star chart and skybox, sun rises in the east, sets in the west. at night you can also find the north star for navigation without a compass and map
it's better to observe someone than approach them head on, lie in chat if need be (if they hear your shots and you're say right on them say you're on the other side of the town if they give they're location) ask if friendly etc and observe what they do. if you say find a fire in a building or something, clear the rooms, get the layout and go outside and find a safe spot you can look over the entrances and exits for awhile and do just that before raiding it. this is how i often get the drop on people and flank them.
if meeting random players, watch for decoys. bandits use decoys quite a bit, someone brings in the player in normal clothes and bandit does the killing while the player is none the wiser.
DON'T DISCLOSE YOUR LOCATION IN SIDE CHAT! this is just asking to have a bandit come shoot you
don't stay in one spot for too long unless you can defend/camp it properly. say i'm going to sit up on a tower sniping, i use the barb wire kits and block all but one entrance/exit so i don't have to worry about someone sneaking up on me.
basically use common sense and trust no one, move fast and with a purpose, use the alt key while moving to look around
if you hear a shot near you, immediately go prone and roll till you can assess the situation
oh yea and the cities on the coast are noob and pvp central, go for supplies at your own risk, but don't get too greedy or stay too long, i'd suggest heading inland as soon as you have the basics you need
use light discipline at night, chemlights are only visible up to about 50 meters, so much better to use than a flare, if you hear shots nearby extinguish your light source so you're not a bright target

Re: DayZ: An open-world, perma-death zombie survival game
Anybody on the Ausse/NZ servers? Bout to fire up a session if i can find an open server and wouldn't say no to a team up. (No mic though unfortunately.)
Pretty average skillwise, played my fair share of fps', but I've never gone far from the coast and still freak out and fire wildy when zombies are on me. Neither bandit nor greedy, but wouldn't say no if I had a partner in crime.
Regarding the game in general though, as a friend put so perfectly;
"Its what I wanted every other zombie game that came out to be like."
Don't think ive missed more than a day or two of playing since I got it, its utterly unforgiving and addictive as hell because of that. Each step of progress I make with every life, only makes me determined to reach that stage and further the next time I spawn.

Re: DayZ: An open-world, perma-death zombie survival game
I might just give up at this point, shit wouldn't let me connect to any online server, realised i had to patch and the patch doesn't fucking work. Keeps telling me the game isn't installed on my computer. So fed up.
