Obviously being a young female producer a lot of guys would write me off a shit before they’ve actually heard any of my music. So sometimes it has been hard to be taken seriously on initial meeting!.... I think sometimes people get a bit shocked or maybe threatened.

Not saying it's impossible to get past - even for a less attractive person - but it's still a truth.
At THIS point, as in, a beginner, they are in your head dude. As I said, get on the net, get your mixes on there, start looking around for online stations with free slots (even stations like Sub.FM have empty slots) and get your name out there. Build up a following, look around for opportunities to guest mix, etc. and after a while, either promoters will come to you (especially if you have a presence locally), or you'll have some kudos to present to promoters if you ever want to play out. At THIS point, nobody will even know you're a woman. Most of the people I've dealt with online could be women, I haven't got a clue.
Don't just pick part of what I said and take it out of context please. Plenty of people are offering helpful suggestions in here, and to see it constantly thrown back in our faces by somebody that asks a tonne of questions but seems to reject or flat out ignore any answers gets a bit tiring.
There were several posts in a row here full of women who got over whatever was put in their way due to their gender and became successful DJs, and that's just the famous ones. If that doesn't inspire you to just get up and do it, well, then I'm not really sure YOU want to do it.
Inb4 BM attempts to make this reflect badly on me.
Also, Maya Jane Coles is gonna be pissed when she finds out you called her "less attractive"

And I've spent quite a bit of time actively thinking about what is going on...
Consider the female who is experiencing these thing on a more subconscious level...
They are molding themselves around influences that they aren't even aware of..
They don't want to pursue things because it just doesn't feel right...
When really they've been subversively programmed away - because of it's negativity.
Just shit in the tic-tac's would you.
That's the negative social construct.

Sacrifice your femininity to work in these circles...
Without losing that which makes you attractive as a mate...
It can be done - but most girls aren't willing to risk that
Guys bash up on other guys all the time...
and a lesbian is not going to have any qualms with doing that...
nor is a black woman going to have qualms about bashing up on some white dudes...
I don't like bashing on people - and I get sniffly when people do it to me..
I'm trying to contribute - you're smashing the door in my face
I'm not gonna wrestle the door with you unless we are laughing.

Sacrifice your femininity, how? I think female DJs/musicians/general female badasses are hot. I like girls with girlballs.

"feminine issues in electronic music..."
"or any industry for that matter..."
"That woman made no sense in regards to what I'm talking about..."
"Let's say - That I as a female have somehow managed to escape the burning building without the babies....
and I decide to enter the world of nightclubs with DJ skills...
What sort of issues do you think I might encounter - that are gender specific."
"Am I allowed to approach men - or is that courting under the guise of learning?"
"Do I have to show you love?"
"I'm definatly going to smile - I'm probably going to be full on blushing - I never approach people - I am SUPER SUPER shy."
"Only the super hot bitch can win at that."
"So I have to wear the shoes then..."
"See how quickly my thread went from the music to very special shoes...
That's a feminine issue..."
"I'm seriously just wondering if you guys even know what a feminine issue is "

I dont know what to think of you, your lower in my books than the unicorn kid in my signature

lovelydivot,
I completely support you and understand what you're saying. I 100% agree that your experience is valid.
Just wanted to say that. Anyone can cite examples of marginalized people succeeding - but that doesn't mean the struggle doesn't exist.

I don't think anybody has denied it, I started listing plenty of examples of female DJs to show that it CAN be done. Some of those names are playing in some of the biggest/best clubs in the world. I feel like a lack of role models in a scene/industry is gonna hold women back, that's why I posted them (to be basically ignored again).
Saying that, maybe BM has foed me, because she's completely ignored solid advice from me and others in favour of posting completely opaque non-sequiters, that's why I've given up, she doesn't want or feel like she needs my help, which is fair enough, I'm only going to waste so much time before I can't be arsed dealing with it any more.
If you completely understand EVERYTHING she's saying, then you're a better man than me.
BM, if you haven't foed me, then you've got a thread of people trying to answer your questions, give you help, suggest ways that you can exhibit your mixes to more people, and IMO you're being pretty rude to the people that have taken the time to make suggestions by acting the way you are. If you didn't want suggestions, I'm baffled as to why you even started the thread.
Inb4 somebody accuses me of talking down to her.

Absolutely, the struggle exists, but that's no reason not to face it. The main problem with this thread is that BM/ld is complaining about all these barriers before she's actually given it a go. In my limited experience, everyone I know that's given it a serious go has had some success... it is almost certainly harder for girls to succeed, but that just means they have to work harder. At no point did any of them sit on an Internet forum complaining about how difficult it all is to give them yet another reason not to do the important bit...
try.
I'm fairly confident the main reason most people on the Production forum, male or female, aren't breaking through is because, simply, they don't work hard enough. It's a hobby. The main thing you'll notice about most people who make it is they had decided they were going to make it before they even played the first note... self belief is an incredible thing.
Everyone has barriers. Women. Ethnic minorities. Homosexuals. The disabled. The poor. The uncool. The foolish. Part of being an adult is facing your own personal selection of handicaps with your head held high and doing whatever the fuck you want.
