Re: Musical Geniuses Of The Last Decade - your choices?
no individuals I can think of
the last musical genius was probably Cole Porter
some bands like the Beatles, the Go-Betweens and the Smiths have been so amazingly distinctive & creative to be considered collectively
but again, no naughties groups come to mind...maybe Horse Power Productions?
wait: Gareth's post below raised Hendrix from the grave of dead genii

Not at all. The vibe of a dilla beat is so unique you can recognise it a mile off. He is unmatched by his immitators as far as I'm concerned. No-one gets it quite right. But the reason you may think he isn't original If anything though is everyone's ripped him off. Same thing happened with Premier for example.hubb wrote:He was a genious when he changed hiphop by being associated to a certain group of people making their own music ?j dilla fueled the soulquarian movement its not even a question if he changed hip hop![]()
He is without a doubt hugely influential and was amazing but no one can say what the unique genious part is, other than an ability to bring a certain swing.
And you don't need to say what the genius part was. He's one of those musicians where the ability to hook listeners in and inspire emotion is the quality rather than obvious performance flair or knowledge of musical theory.
Look at the number of hip hop producers that acknowledge him as being both a huge influence and one of the best hip hop has seen. Ok since his death he may have gained an annoying lick arse internet cult following but it before that he was still a producers producer. His influence extends so much too, you can hear it not only in the leftfield instrumental hip hop scene but still strongly in loads of pop music to this day.
Burial has not done that. Not remotely. Even in dubstep his influence isn't direct a lot of the time. You're just falling into some blind fan-boy vision because you prefer his music.
I mean I don't even produce hip hop but Dilla's beats have affected the way I think about producing music. Burial not really at all. What has Burial brought to the table that's so game changing? Why are you going to have both pop producers and signings to respected electronica labels sounding off about his influence in 10 years time. Because that's what Dilla has. Burial's already lost it anyway. His most recent releases were stereotypes of his own music to the point they just sounded try hard and cheesy.

So basically, your point is that a lot of the producers in this thread haven't been around as long as Bach? Or at least as long as the likes of Hendrix and Page?Jurkhands wrote:60ies had Syd Barrett
70ies had Freddie Mercury
80ies had MJ
90ies had Aphex Twin
if we look a bit closer we even find guys like Jim Morrison, Pierre Schaeffer, James Jamerson, Keith Jarrett, Eddie Hazel, Joe Zawinul, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page. and I'm sure there's dozens of Bachs and Mahlers and Verdis and Beethovens that I never ever heard of because I unfortunately know jack about classical music.
and you guys telling me about Jam City and Wiley and Lil B. fucks sake.
Also, MJ lol, guy was a singer and dancer, yet he's a musical genius and Wiley who basically spearheaded a whole movement in production and vocals isn't?
Shut up.

Re: Musical Geniuses Of The Last Decade - your choices?
being known and listened to in 40 years time =/= genius. just means you had more succes than your peers.
imo some of you aren't taking into account the fact that now there's a thousand different scenes/niches/whatever going on at once and one person innovating isn't going to affect all of them.
as for influence, it's not universal. you can't say producer x is more worthy of being called a genius than producer y because he influenced more people.
