Nobody should be forcing anything.

But, people should take a look at what's happening and generally educate themselves as to where their food is really coming from. Look at all the ugly nasty things and then see if their conscience still wants to eat meat. I think it's worth it for the health benefits alone.

I think most people would probably turn veggie or vegan were they to force themselves to take a look at where it comes from and how bubba treats the animals on the kill floor. Everything is so easy to ignore when it's in little plastic packages.

I always suggest start by reading fast food nation. Or the Jungle.

You can't make an educated decision if you choose to ignore what's up.

:)

I wonder why meaty eatys are all over this thread? Have the veges jumped into the meat thread and pissed on the parade?

I respect vegetarians, but yes, the preaching (similar to ex-smokers) can come across as a bit 'holier than thou' sometimes.

Presumably they all wear hemp.

Sorry, didn't realise this was an exclusive thread. But seriously, it's just a bit of debate. We don't want any beef (and you veggies sure don't).

Or, you could use a bear. Or even a large dog.
But (generally) humans don't eat tiger, or bear. I'd fancy my chances against a chicken or a pig though.
That's not the point. Anything cocky enough to think it's at the top of the food chain whilst gorging on chemically treated meat mass produced in a factory and killed/prepared by other people are NOT at the top of the chain, are they? I mean in the real sense. Being so removed from the actual process and all.

;)

You'd fancy your chances with a pig or chicken were it already cut up and sat between two bits of bread.
I understand your point there. That last sentence is typical preachy vegetarian though. In my humble, meat-eating-savage opinion.
It's fine being preachy in a thread that was made for the veges. :) What are you expecting in a thread entitled 'vegetarians'?

;)

You're not really a savage if you're not killing the meat yourself. You're just a consumer. I mean, maybe you are in a position to kill your own food, or something? Some people raise animals to eat, but that's different to idly chomping stuff that comes out of one end of this crazy meat industry machine. It's the industry that's fucked.

I'd probably still eat meat were I to have a farm and see to everything myself, but I'm currently in a system where I depend on other's for my food, so I'd prefer to know the consequences of my actions. My head was in the sand for too long.

lets take it back a couple centuries

what if human slavery was socially acceptable in our communities

what if some people stepped up and said its fucked up.
and then the people who grew up with it would say its just fine and have all their scientific evidence for why they deserve to have slaves.

and then say perk says she's going to raise her kids to not own slaves.

and then some genius says kids should be able to make up their own minds and that parents shouldn't be pushy with their morals.

I hope I'm not included in your whining reference there, Parson? I only opened this thread today and I can't help getting the impression that the vegetarians are able to make thinly veiled swipes at meat eaters morals and intelligence. Carnivores on the other hand, some of whom I acknowledge have made silly comments, are further dismissed as whiny if objection is raised?

I think everybody should watch the 'eating' documentary. They should also read fast food nation.

If you can suggest any materials that inform us why a diet of factory produced meat is all good, all the veges should watch that.

Then debating can start.

Parson, you're a very clever guy, however, I don't think you used the best analogy there.

Perk said it's all about choices - then she said no way will her children eat meat. To be honest, more than anything I was jumping on this contradiction more than the actual issue itself...Now look, hey presto, I'm fully drawn in to the debate.

:D

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... earthlings

EARTHLINGS is a feature length documentary about humanity's absolute dependence on animals (for pets, food, clothing, entertainment, and ... all ยป scientific research) but also illustrates our complete disrespect for these so-called "non-human providers." The film is narrated by Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix (GLADIATOR) and features music by the critically acclaimed platinum artist Moby.

With an in-depth study into pet stores, puppy mills and animals shelters, as well as factory farms, the leather and fur trades, sports and entertainment industries, and finally the medical and scientific profession, EARTHLINGS uses hidden cameras and never before seen footage to chronicle the day-to-day practices of some of the largest industries in the world, all of which rely entirely on animals for profit. Powerful, informative and thought-provoking, EARTHLINGS is by far the most comprehensive documentary ever produced on the correlation between nature, animals, and human economic interests. There are many worthy animal rights films available, but this one transcends the setting. EARTHLINGS cries to be seen. Highly recommended!

I'm not in the position where I am able to breed, look after and subsequently slaughter and eat my own animals. Admittedly, that would be ideal. As such, seeing that I have made the choice to eat meat, I try to educate myself as to where my meat has come from and how it has lived.

I agree whole heartedly that there is nothing worse than people shovelling meat into their mouths without having any comprehension or appreciation of what has happened in oder for them to be eating said meat. But meat eaters are not all ignorant tossers who couldn't give a fuck where their food has originated, just as much as vegetarians are not all hemp wearing, chanting, tree hugging hippies.

Good comment.

I've not read the whole thread...anyone on Team V who eats fish? I'm always curious as to the distinction.

people that eat meat don't tend to look down on vegetarians so why do vegetarians feel the need to preach and look down on people that eat meat?

I have a genuine question for the vegetarian pet owners.

What do you feed your pets?

my cats get iams cat food. its got meat products in there.
i have no problem with that.

cats are allowed to eat meat. cats are not raping the planet.

i have researched iams and found out that they are not the best company to be buying food from. i have problems with their questionable ethics.

i've even tried getting my cats off the iams and on to some more expensive health food store crap which they liked better but i can't afford that stuff and the place is too far away for me to get to easily
