Finally proud enough of something to submit to you guys as a "final product" and not a WIP. Please let me know what you think! Also I could not have made this without the help of a fellow DSFer, you know who you are!

All constructive criticism is welcome. Seriously.

These growls... how the fuck... I'm sorry if this has been posted before I've been away from the site for a while but... holy sweet mother of jesus if I could figure these growls out my life would be complete
Soundcloud
I'm thinking it has to be like some kind of neuro nonsense that was resampled and chopped up, but it's so liquid and vowelly and sounds like the kind of precise modulation that would be really hard to achieve with a sampled bass... maybe it's multiple layers? FM8 wizardry? Magical spells? Secret incantations inside a hidden temple, spoken at the exact right time to evoke the power of the god of bass? HAM vst? I honestly have no clue

Definitely sounds resampled, maybe vocoded or granulised as it sounds so wet... imo the growls actually sound way too wet in that track but it's still well put together.

Hook uses fm8 for his growls, along with ohmicide, which leaves a very distinctive sound on them, making them 'dirty'. They're on ableton if I recall correctly, but their mastering and bass processing sounds like they've used Image-Line's maximus/soundgoodizer. Ohmicide + soundgoodizer is an easy way to make the 'otter' sound or whatever they named it again, it's basically just the tail left by the distortion after the initial sound cuts off. This tutorial lacks that distinctive sound, which is what makes their growls imo. Not a bad attempt by the guy though

So heres my first ever finished product of making growls in FM8. Originally I was going for the extra super squisjy wubs but stuck to these more metallic ones. Oh well. IF anyone likes the sounds of these Ill gladly give some pointers

Massive, with a grain II on bend minus with the wt and instensity on macro 1
osc 2 speech with macro 1 on wt and intensity
into parallel filters with a band reject
then t tube and p shaper
then mess with EQ modulation and some reverb with modulation on the send amount and maybe some frohmage to phatten it up a bit
Hope this helps

Damn yeah sorry, it's two filters running in parallel but the second is letting the un filtered signal through so it's switched on but it doesn't have a filter selected

Ah smart idea, kinda helps fill some missing frequencies..
I think I'm going to try to remake your growl! I think it's awesome haha good job

Hey guys. I didn't want to leave on a bad note because i love all of you. I wont be giving away any screen shots or any exact details but i will give you some things that i have learned and some things that helped me a lot with growls and just sound design in general in the past couple months.
1.) this is like the biggest tip ever. Pitch bend that shit like crazy. The movement of the vowels doesn't only come from eq modulation. Make your ideal growl bass with your mouth, then do it again, but this time without changing the pitch of your voice. It makes a huge difference. (at least for me...)
2.) more on the topic of movement. Movement is really fucking important so the sound is morphing all of the time. Idk if any of the growl bass kings do this, but i detune everything in fm8 slightly so it adds more movement.
3. I dont use them, but i think vocoders are really neat.
4.) use notches. It makes the sound breathy and vocal.
5.) eq before distortion. The reason for this is it cements the vowel in place and evens out the frequency spectrum.
6.) never use an effect without knowing exactly why it is there and what it is doing. This is for sanity and function.
7.) this is one i just recently learned. If you wanna make sick growls, learn to make sick reeses. In face, think of growl basses simply as a reese bass, but instead of a detuned saw, you are using anything you fucking want. The effects chain is vital.
8.) on a similar note, really really nice clear vowels can be made with just a highpass.
9.) uhhh i like never resample to process basses. I just bounce what i make, then chop it.
10.) this piece of information has kept me sane many times when im discouraged, and its how i like to think of sound design all of the time: think of sound as a brick of white noise. You can shape that noise into ANY sound in the entire world with the correct eq modulation.
i dont really know what else. I make new sounds every time barely alive makes a new song. I dont ever make them the same way but the things i said above are a good starting point for my thought process.

Thank you m8, I can see why you wouldn't post pics because its your SIGNATURE SOUND. Just like Datsik's "Woof" wobble or Noisia's Reese bass or Kill the noise's Growl, you wouldn't just want to give it away. These tips are just fine!

Hey!
Here's my growl bass attempt:
(I made it today so it's not actually perfect)
https://soundcloud.com/olybri/growl-bass-test/s-zokSt
And here's the bass without the beat:
https://soundcloud.com/olybri/growl-bas ... ly/s-wqwHA
I used NI Massive and IL Vocodex.
I look forward to any feedback!
