Yeah, i'm seriously considering The Last of Us. Looks insanely violent though and potentially only 17 hours of story (mode?). Is that a lot these days? I remember FF7 taking, like, 74 hours or something..

Only 17 hours, yet the game is getting 10/10 by a lot of reviewers. smh.

Well stuff like FF is a different kind of gaming. Last of Us seems pretty fast paced action to drive the storyline, with some stealthly bits.
I dunno if you're being sarcastic there SheepShagga, but I don't see the connection between how good a game is and how 'long' it is. The great games/songs/films always leave you wanting more.
Anyway what takes someone 17 hours might take another 47 hours. I wish I could do 12 hour gaming marathons like when I was 15 lol. There's probably gonna be some additional DLC too.
Speaking of good 'short' games, if you guys haven't checked out Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon check it. I thought it was better than Far Cry 3 itself.

Yeah, I suppose you're right and I can't really complain when it's only £40.
I remember paying more than that for NES cartridges!

I'm serious. Even 47 hours isn't
that long, especially for a 10/10 game. Imo, games that are 10/10 should change your life. I don't see how one weeks worth of content would do that.
Maybe I just don't like linear games.

Perhaps its just me but I don't see it as a good investment at all, not when games like Fallout last at least 20 times longer for the same price.

This has an online multi-player option though (not saying fallout doesn't, idk) so it's not as if it's 17 hrs then chuck it in the bin.
I don't see any video game as a 'good investment'. It's just £40 well spent as a celebration of the win over communism.

Chess. Back on it in a big way, playing lots on 'eboard' on Linux, I somehow forgot how enjoyable it can be getting fucked up by a good player somewhere in the world!

What the fuck are you on mate? Length has absolutely nothing to do with quality. Yeah, Final Fantasy games might have story modes that go for fucking years, but they're also a complete load of wank and 60% filler. Half-Life 2 is one of the greatest games of all time and you can blow through it in like 10 hours. Most linear games are shorter than that. For a linear game, 17 hours of solid content is pretty fucking impressive. Do you watch 90 minute movies and go "should have been twice as long, shit movie"? What you've just said is completely baffling to me.

Yeah FF isn't really a fair comparison, TLOU isn't an RPG. 17 hours is plenty long enough for this kind of game imo, I usually only play casually these days so would be like an hour a day and probably not everyday so I expect it'd take me a couple weeks to do and will no doubt replay.
If you compare it to a film you may pay ten - fifteen quid for, it's a pretty good deal

Yeah the Last of Us multiplayer seems like it's gonna be pretty nice.
@Laszlo: No, Fallout 3/New Vegas doesn't have multiplayer sadly. They were working on Fallout Online, MMORPG style version of Fallout but legal troubles happened and it's dead now. Still disappointed about that. They were forced to remove all references to the Fallout franchise, the game is now called Project V13.
Is there a thread for ninjas on PSN? I remember an xbox live one a few years ago...
Tried search but couldn't find anything after 15 pages of 'playstation'.

^^I see. Might have a look and see if I can get these Fallout games cheap second hand. I keep hearing good things about them. At the moment though it's most likely going to be TLOU and then wait for the new GTA.

Here's a racing car game, we modelled 2 cars and half of Silverstone. You'l probably get bored after a few hours but it's a fucking great game because the physics, graphics and ai are really good and the content that is there is really good. Length has nothing to do with the quality of the game overall. 10/10
Here's another racing car game; it features over 2000 cars and 200 tracks. Unfortunately, a few of the Ford Sierra RS 500's have incorrectly listed horsepower figures and the physics are a tad weak in a few areas. 8/10.
Here's a new tune, it only lasts for 10 seconds but it's really fucking innovative and shit and length has nothing to do with the quality of the tune overall. Out now on 12" for just £10!
Yes I wouldn't rate virtually any movie that lasts about 20 times less than a movie as perfect. Let's say an average movie lasts 150 minutes; I would not be able to rate a movie that lasts seven and a half minutes long as perfect because it isn't'. It's way too short, no matter how good the 7.5 minutes are. I might be able to rate it as 10/10 if it is marketed as a short story and is online for free, providing you watch 5 adverts. I see no conceivable way you could queue up for the cinema, pay £7 get in, watch 30 minutes of trailers and then 7 minutes and 30 seconds of film and walk out of the cinema without thinking of a single way in which this
movie could have been better.

Well you've just given a bunch of ridiculous examples, none of that has anything to do with what we're talking about. You're trying to argue that a single-player game can't possibly be worthy of a 10/10 because it has
only 17 hours of gameplay, but that's actually longer than the average linear game. We're not talking about a 2 hour long game here, we're talking about 17 hours in a genre that rarely gives more than 15. Check any list of the greatest games of all time, and I guarantee you the majority of the linear, singleplayer games on the list will off under 20 hours of play. Shit, Portal is considered one of the greatest and there's about 4 hours of gameplay there. Length does not equal quality.
EDIT: Here is one such list, Portal is the number 1 game of all time on this one:
