Jamming & sketching out ideas quickly is one advantage of a midi keyboard... Producing basslines takes me half the time...

Not that I'm above drawing in notes with a the pencil tool though lol :)

fliPPo: I guess it's because the KrK's are great? What really bugs me is they just announced Generation 2, after having mine for 1 month. GREAT!

bEErz: Until recently, my music lacked in quite everything. Without keyboard, there is no play, and without play, there is no fun!

Why pick on the fella?

With regards to production techniques, we all have our preferences.

Tbh, I spent a good year drawing in midi arrangements by hand and it worked well.

While I realise that using a keyboard can speed up work flow, it doesn't solve the issue of being creative in the first place..

Midi editing by hand for the win I say. It's not like we don't quantise our hand played recordings anyway..!

That said, anyone with a spare 88 key weighted keyboard please send it my way lol ;)

I guess it depends what you're writing. I feel like I've got my hands tied behind my back with no midi. Tunes would be completley different if I couldn't have hands-on control.

We need to remember that Bach, Beethoven et al didn't use midi keyboards ;)

That said, I personally find using a midi keyboard indespencible when recording piano parts etc.. Improved improvisation in half the time, defo.

My best d'n'b track was written on Reason 1 using only a mouse however...!!!1

What's amusing is to see programs like Reason 4 offering advanced quantisation methods to bring back the 'live' feel to parts that would have originally been done live as standard! :o

I say we all go back to plainsong choral composition and harmonies.. :P

As you can see I do not really use the old midi keyboard, but when I get my 15" bass amp back I will sample some of the old organ sounds with plenty of sub ;-)
The stage piano is a blessing however :-)

Some mind blowing setups in this thread,
Especially Flippo, who looks like Monkey Maffia of Freude am Tanzen
