Why would you want to exactly replicate it to begin with? Great you can make a copy of skrillex's SMANS, it's been done what is the point in replicating other peoples sounds? Half the songs in the genre already sound like carbon copies of one another what would one gain by recreating skrillex's bass? I mention the vast amount of tutorials because that's all you need to get the ball rolling, if you're just trying to copy these guys sounds to the T (for whatever reason) nothing short of a project file/patch is going to help you out.. which they aren't going to give up obviously.

Noisia. Ages ago (maybe just around the release of SMANS) I remember reading a piece on how he spent some time with Noisia whilst producing the EP. He already had the glitchy electrohouse stuff down from his first EP add in some Noisia inspired growls and reeces and you get SMANS.

I'd still like to see this, just because no-one I've heard on YouTube or on some copycat Beatport release has ever really done anything similar. I know people really don't care, think it's pointless etc, so do I in many respects - wow we can make one more sound - but I'd still like to see it.

KOAN are very friendly guys and have always been down for interviews. It took me minimal effort to get their dubsaw session and interview. They've just been always hesitant to give any info on their kind of trademarked sounds as they dint want anyone biting on them.

A lot of the people mentioned in this thread have the same management and could easily be out in contact with.

Being friends with a lot of them and having organized/conducted interviews with a lot of them I know they all respect the power of DSF and a lot of them use it personally. I'm sure most of them would be down to do it.

Anyways, I would like to see xKore, he did a really shit Q&A on an FB status when he was "bored in an airport" and he also used to post daily on the NewGrounds production forums. (He still "lurks" as his latest post on there entails) So I would imagine he would be pretty down for a Q&A, especially with his new EP coming out on Inspected.

If not him, then SubVibe would be cool, they're up and coming and have some nice sounds. If you guys haven't heard them then here's an example:

Well I think thats nonsense and it's the guy alone at work, but I would like to know how he got that good at FM synthesis alone and how he came up with that sound. If you have tried yourself, you'll know it CANT be simple "experimentation" because you keep doing circles and never getting results. You always get a really cheap sounding version of that (like the guys on Youtube). You gotta have pretty good notions on what you are doing with FM synthesis to tweak around and come up that sound.

Im not really interested in other bro artists because their midranges sound way too much like default Massive work.

datsik and filthzilla use the same formant freqshift fm bass, pm them.

Are you implying that thats it? Because these guys midranges sound like a joke compared to Skrillex.

Yeah. Not even Dan Larssen gets it right really. It may sound "close", but if you pay some attention and listen with detail you see it's not there by far. He uses that distortion cabinets on FM8 that washes up the sound and makes it sound really bad, like if it came off a guitar cabinet, it sounds really dull. I don't think Skrillex used that. Also the modulations for the actual "talking" effect, im sure there is more to it than simply moving the notches on the EQ. The sound on Scary Monsters gets so twisted, you get a sense of something moving and morphing. With Dan Larssens take you get a constant noise and the only thing that he is modulating is the EQ.
Another thing i've noticed in SMANS growl is there is some sort of bitcrusher effect happening sometimes, but i've tried that too and it doesn't work, it destroy's too much the sound. Same goes for using something Ohmicide or your average distortion plugin. It destroy's the sound harmonics too much to the point it doesn't sound clear. It starts sounding like a fuzzy electric guitar. I've heard people claiming how AmpliTube 3 is good for this. Well, it's garbage. It again, makes the sound sound like if it came out of a guitar cabinet, far from what you hear on SMANS.

One of the best things you can do (and one of the things they will tell you do to if you study sound related stuff) is to reverse engineer other sounds. This is a great way of learning how stuff works.
Btw, there is a Skrillex interview where he says he came up with that sound when trying to copy Noisia's sound.

Also, in some of his interviews he says he did that with a laptop and speakers, and one of the speakers was blown up... thats fucking bullshit. And this was profesionally mastered at some place in London. Would like to hear the un-mastered version. But well the growl patch was not done by the mastering engineer so.

I asked Downlink and he said he was gunna do it, he just said that he may have to reschedule. So i'm guessin there was already a date picked.

Honestly I don't remember, as I said it was before he "blew up", an internet search now just brings up thousands of useless posts - part of me thinks it may have been an old video interview. But I think that's the reason they did a remix on that EP - when the EP was released he was basically nobody and Noisia were already a staple in DnB...

What I remember reading is he came up with his signature monster growl when A/B'ing Noisia all the time or something like that.

I agree completely with you. I think skrillex is in a league of his own. Actually I know it. Any serious person can hear that he's miles away from the competition and he's done something to electronic music that most entire record labels or scenes don't manage to do. I'm not a psychologist but I'm quite confident that the mass outbreak of skrillex hate is a direct reflection of how much of a genius he really is and how much of an ironic group of elitist pseudo-producers the people that hate him really are.

I think maybe in a few years people will start to adopt that sound more comfortably and the legendary growls in SMNS can become public domain.

As for modulating the sound it really does come down to modulate the hell out of fm8 and processing the hell out of it as well. If you modulate like 5 operators, feedbacks, and run it through ohmicide, then camel phat, (making sure to modulate filters and parameters in those plugins as well in tandem) then modulate the formant of a vocoder and run it through more distortion, then run it into EQ8 with modulating formant bands, and then split the track into two track and pan them hard left and right and then alter each speaker side very slighty and adjust the phase....

I gaurantee you it will sound crazy.. maybe not exactly like the skrillex one but that just comes down to how many variable there really are when you have like 15 plugins to make one sound.


btw, i've gotten sounds that are SO close to scary monsters. of course thats just my word but try all that stuff I said and you'll get it too. (it just that every modulated parameter can make or break that sound.. so you gotta be like a painter with it)
