So the general consensus seems to be that using un-cleared samples in tracks and making money off of them is A-ok, but anyone downloading said tracks on a file sharing programme should be treated as some sort of pariah? This shit gets harder and harder to follow.

Anyways, given this quite a few more plays, still feeling the same way. Nice album to listen to but don’t understand the hype. I guess my musical palate just isn’t sophisticated enough.

There are some beautiful tracks on there, but not as many as on the first. I suspect people who really felt the first, wanted the same feeling to thread through the whole of the new one too, I know I did, and because people started saying it's a great great, emotionally charged lp, initially they believed it was - Emperor's New Clothes syndrome. But I don't think it's as wonderful as that, or as great as I wanted it to be, having lived with it for a while.

But that's all relative to the first. It's still a very beautiful, if slightly patchy lp.

But, the reason people broadcast the samples is because it's interesting to know where the source of the music comes from. There's forums dedicated to sample digging. It's not to make someone feel smart but to give others a chance to check out other music. If you like the song that samples the original, you might like the original!

I think the real problem, is that Hyperdub should've either got clearance, or dropped the samples from the lp. If they didn't want to be found out, and let's face it, in these times of instant information, it's pretty likely, then they should've safeguarded against it. Very risky business dabbling in film samples...there's a very good reason why there aren't many over-the-counter records with such samples on...it's a labyrinthine nightmare of legalities.

Finally got my copy today. Switched off my phone, computer and lights and grabbing a box of kleenex as well as a tripple dram of my favourite malt now.

Blimey, I'm completely paralysed after this first listen...

Anyway, LEQ, I ordered it immediately when it came out at Boomkat so my vinyl version has the messed up tracklisting.

(Edit: if that is what you wanted to know.)

My copy from boomkat came with an insert that looks exactly like the cover art with the downcast guy and tea, as drawn by the man himself.

I might add that this album strangely suits the wild and rugged spaces of the South Island of New Zealand very well. Must be my nostalgia for all those outdoor raves of yesteryear :)

hey it would be interesting to know what the samples were, can somebody pm the names for me !? i reckon it some US rnb stuff..

as for the album, listened it once, tunes were beautiful, but had to sent the lp back because of the pad pressing (hiss)

gutted...

now im waiting foe my cd. :(

Buying their stuff is definitely helping them out in the scene and thats something i really like to do, as some other people for sure.

Er, they're making thousands of pounds, and not paying people for use of their work...there's no copyright or mention of the samples on the artwork, which usually means they're not cleared. Under-the-counter cultural guerrilla releases are great for side-stepping and sticking two fingers up to the corporates, but really, when you've sold 20,000 and counting of the debut, you're actually not such a small label anymore, and you really have to be careful. Don't have much sympathy for anyone who is willing to flout the law and make money out of other people's work, no matter how gargantuan the corporate interest.

I'm not telling if they are legal or illegal, just said that we don't know the steps that the label took, there are some people that are getting too concerned about this issue actually.
