That growl is pretty weird to make as it takes the guitar distortion technique but exaggerates it. To make it use the Guitar-Pulse wavetable in massive, and some other strong wavetables like Crude or Strontium etc. Then put on a double notch filter and a tiny amount of scream filter, then use a guitar amp like Guitar Rig or the Amp in Ableton then eq a bit then boom!

Hope that Helped

Hello, Your Friendly Producer Here.
I have come to give back to all of you from what i've learned over a period of time. (Thank you to everyone who shares the things they learn along the way here!) :Q: :Q: :Q:
Is it good? I think some of the swiggity swooty's i've made myself are pretty nice. Below is a little growly bass made in Harmor, (Er, sorry to all you non-fl users. I have a cases of Fm8 stuff and massive to come if you all would like :) -- )
But here it is: Soundcloud
Best build up you've heard so far with a little vocal sample for your afternoon cereal. :i:
I took some ideas from Omega, which you sir have been a great help to me and I know many others as well. A BIG thanks to you! :Q:
The sound is still a little messy and rough since I JUST made it in about 20 ish minutes after including my CPU taking a bathroom break. Har mer Petch > EQ > EQ > Waveshaper > WOW > Vocodexter > Ohmicide
Not much to it, not sure if anyone would like it as this might sound a little under what a lot of people are sharing under here, But if anyone would want it just reply and i'll post some pictures :)

Hey guys. I've visited this thread a few times and think there's a lot of helpful advice in it. If you like the growl/roaring bass in this track and have any questions about a particular aspect of the process, I'd be happy to contribute.

So since no one got close to that nice Scary Monsters growl yet after years, we should ask Skrillex himself tomorrow flooding him with questions as he is doing a reddit AMA

"How did you create Scary Monster's Growl? could you explain with detail? also why your modern growls sound like silly high pitched clown noises?" lol, you can omit the last part.

Ocular actually came super close!

Realize this thread is like a BIG TEAM working together... If it was just one person constantly going through the process of making trying to get this growl they would be old or dead by the time they got it down (not saying I'm anywhere close to it) BUT with the help of everyone here, it speeds up that process and we can achieve this growl!
This should no longer be a secret sound!!!

Started tinkering with FM8 and EQ modulation yesterday after reading some of the tips and tricks you guys have written on this thread and I got a couple questions I hope someone can answer.

Soundcloud

This is so far the closest I've gotten, but I feel like it's too muddy, does anyone know how I can clean it up a little bit? Slapped on a high pass filter and boosted slightly on the high end but still doesn't sound great. You might have to click the link as it's set to private

So my recent problems with growls are the different distortion band types and where hp filters are suppose to go, what to boost in the eq's... I think I pretty much gave up on these growls sadly enough..

Thanks man!

They are mostly same stuff as before (previous clip I posted is on the page 121 along with an explanation how it was made): saw waves + FM/AM + hard sync + filters + lots of automation + FXs + resampling. I don't think that growls are hardest stuff of all to make, but making them sound musical, clean and fit the track is.

Ah right didn't see that post, thank you! I don't think growls are hard to make at all (especially compared to some neuro reeses) although getting the required timbre can sometimes be hard. To me, it sounds as if you've almost manage to crack the timbre of the smans growl; when listening to the smans growl I can hear some bitcrushing and it sounds quite messy but full at the same time. I can hear the same qualities of that growl in yours, just a little bit less professional. Keep at it though, you've almost nailed it.

Barely Alive's growls, whilst sounding awesome don't get me wrong, don't seem to be as thick and full as Skrillex's, and even if the movement of your growls still isn't quite there yet, the timbre definitely is, and that is something important that I'd love to achieve.

Basically, in the SMANS growl there is a kind of bitcrushed noise sound alongside the growl and there is in yours too. How did you achieve that effect? Sorry if it is a bit of a difficult question:)

Good job again man

HyperXonic's made a theory about why Terror Squad and All Fair is Love and Brostep, this is quote on quote what he said

"so the skrillex track used to be called "Untitled DJ Tool" aka "This Much Power" and now aka "All is fair in love and brostep". when skrillex came out with Untitled DJ tool, zomboy copied the main elements and came out with Terror Squad. Skrill then took Untitled DJ Tool, changed it a bit to mock Zomboy and then released it as All Is Fair In Love and Brostep which is a play on the expression "all is fair in love and war". My theory is that zomboy and skrillex are both in on this and are sitting back laughing their asses off at the fanboy wars. After all, skrill and zomboy are friends"
