I mean, after listening to damn near all my influences an paying attention to their drums, I'm like what the fuck?? Their shit doesn't have any level of strong drums, and I mean damn near everyone. Sorry if I like a more natural sounding drum kit than these minimal bullshit kicks an snares out there. Having played rock music for 13 years, I'd think I know what sounds good an doesn't. Isn't kick really meant to be felt?? even listening with out sub i understand that you should hear some top end... but, the make the drums punchier comments are getting under my skin... I mean really... 80% of you guys need "more powerful drums" not to mention, that I have to turn my volume knob up nearly all the way to even hear your wips...

maybe i should just pull the whole song down to -30db an just let the drums stand tall. i mean fuck...

You need better drum samples, plain and simple.
Get a better pattern going as well other than just a bland old kick and snare. Fill those spaces with some hats and other percussion and it should make it sound a lot better.

i think it's more your mixdown that is letting your drums down

okay, so with all that said, any advice on the overall db levels I should be working with here? basses. subs, drums??? everyone can say that they are lacking, but noone can really give anything useful as to what I can do to correct it. Other than, eq, layer, blabhablhablah. which I've done all that proper in terms of frequency ranges an all that jazz. I mean I'm not retarded I do understand how to take what people are saying in and at least attempt to correct it. All I'm sayn' is that I'm tired of hearing that shit, when I play even your songs, and I can't tell the difference between your 'superior' drums, VS my shitty drums. They can't sound THAT bad, I mean come on... really? You guys can't tell me it doesn't grind your gears when some asshole post some cliche comment about your tunes when you know damn well they don't have that much room to preach... not sayin everyone on here is shit, or you even. Just it gets old really quick.

wizeguys comment has been more useful than anyone on here so far. perhaps I should bring everything down a bit to let the drums come up??? yes its a learning experience, and yes I really do appreciate the 'constructive criticism'. I wouldn't post anything on here if I weren't trying to get advice or opinions, that's what this thread is for. Just someone actually HELP with the problem, cause I've been struggling with the whole 'mixdown' thing for like 3 days and haven't even tried to do anything with structure or anything. I'd really like to get over this mixing wall, so if you could please point me to some type of guide at least, that would be awesome.

@amphibian - oh, sorry, my bad... I didn't read the rules. So, "In Wake of Sin" is going to be really nice tune, but for me the bass line is too silent. Vocal actually fits very well. Also interesting drum line, I like it :]
@R3N3gAD3 - good chillin' tune, but after drop vocal is so much hidden somewhere between the rest of sounds. Should be quite louder for me, but maybe that was what you'd like to do Nice!

@ JIMBEAUX: Dude, YOU ARE A BEAST! That was insane! I actually LOVED IT! The growl reminds me of Scatta, the dark atmosphere is great. Although your kick and snare do lack sort of. Maybe boost the kick at 100-117 Hz and just get a better snare sample. Idk. But overall, it was great. I'm not one to totally not like listening to something just because the drums sort of lack. I don't give a fuck as long as it's good.

@ KOTU: Very very good dude! You have a good dynamic range and it's tight. Where'd you get those string samples from? I really need some for my rap stuff. Overall, it reminds me of the Terminator movies . When all the instruments are brought in, that's just a pile of jizz. That's just awesome. Good job. Although the snare (and pretty much everything towards the end) could be a bit brighter. Maybe raise 18Khz on everything a tad.

Here's a WIP I've been doing for about a week now. This is a rap beat that I'm making for this dude's mixtape that's coming out sooner or later. He's pretty good. He goes by Nino Lewis, and I suggest you look up Nino Lewis Worth The Wait if you want to hear one of his new songs. Now, I will say this again, THIS IS A RAP BEAT. Just so you don't go into it thinking it's supposed to stand on it's own.

Now, I'm looking for some specific FB on this, I'm wondering if the low end is muddy or not to you. And then once you establish that then you can say w/e you feel.

@Stranger_sounds .....Sick idea. not too keep on the hi hats. Really like the vibe of it. Like what you've done with the sample aswell!

@Gaufre.... Didn't like it at first but still ended up listening to the whole thing. Something mesmerising about it. Maybe drop the pad type sound at the second drop and make it a bit darker. I reckon that would be sick. Nice track

@deafblindmusic... I like it. Would be deep in a club. Maybe beef up the snare a little. Nice work.

@Chaddub......Do one. first time i did it. your WIP sounds good but the low end does seem a little bit muddy. idk, maybe give the kick a bit more kick. the rolling hats are well nice.

@jimbeaux - mate, as has been said - this is a WIP forum. Personally I think you have a little too much pride and taking offense at what people say. Just because -you- think it's good, doesn't make it good. Try a little humility and take everything onboard. If you disagree, that's one thing - but to lash out at people who are providing feedback on a thread dedicated to it is rather arrogant.

You say you've done all the "eq proper" but iirc, your tune's faults were in the sample selection, not the eq.

@standby - that's a freakin' GREAT track man. Would love a 320 when done Disagree about more reverb on that gamey sound, imho it sits really nicely - just needs to be brought a little more forward and eq'd a little better.

Imo, Don't get into an arms race with pulling everything up. The reason people tend do mixdowns at a lower volume is it makes them easier to master. Your snare just sounds a bit flat to me. it sounds like it has plenty of punch but not enough high end, and it's pretty stagnent. The tail on its reverb sounds like it has too much low end. It is also buried a lot of times under your main synth. Try layering one with some movement (sorry I can't really find better words to describe it).

@Ascian - Bloody heavy mate, sounds very well produced aswell. The only thing I would change personally, is the prominence of the kick in the mix, to my ears it sounds a little to upfront.

I can honestly say, that I am sorry for lashing out. I did not really intend to personally attack anyone an didn't in anyway. I read the entire mixdown section that 'macc' had been a major part of, and after reading an understanding all of that what was said in 3 years of information presented on this subject, I have realized its not so much my eq work, that it's my mixdown in general, and samples that I had selected, like wizeguy had mentioned. I agree that the snares I've picked sounded flat, but it was more personal preference when it came down to layering the ones I had used. I totally understand now what problems I've been having with gain structuring and finding that balance in head room. I had focused on overall loudness, when in fact I should have focused on quality an dynamic range versus overall loudness when compared to reference tracks. I should have done the opposite, and turned the reference tracks down to the level of my tracks an focused on the quality an level of the sounds in the mix of those reference tracks. It took a while to read it all, but now I understand it's a common problem an I do apologize to you guys for being so emotionally involved. It's just that I feel like I've spent alot of time trying to get things right, an hadn't quite met the standard you know? I'm still learning and I do appreciate the interaction from the people who've taken time to listen an tell me what I'm doing wrong.

I really am genuinely sorry for being such an ass, but like many, you cannot help how you feel, I could have chosen a different approach, but I do feel like I did respond to Standbys correction quite well. I'm not here to offend anyone, or make enemies, only learn an share. Dubstep has become such an expressive part of my life, and the last thing I want to do, is be banned from this site by lashing out.
