i mean i honestly cant claim to really know either, because although i did get into it in ~07, i only ever experienced things through the internet at that time (and through the eyes and mind of a 13 year old )
but i guess if you're just counting the number of people who are aware of it, then you'd be correct, but i think its more meaningful to think of it measured by the proportion of people. back then, the ratio of knowledgeable people to ignorant people was far higher than it is now. just think of how many millions of clueless bandwagon hoppers have flooded into the population of dubstep listeners, driving down that ratio of heads who know to the heads that dont
