Tweeters at ear level. Monitors pointed inwards (towards your head at a 60 degrees angle). The distance between the two monitors should be the same as the distance beween you and each monitor.

if i were you I would just stack some books underneath them, move them towards the corners of your desk, and angle them towards yourselfSonika wrote:Cheers Eridu, will try

Okay thanks everyone. I have heard that having them close to the wall messes with the portrayal of bass frequencies, so where is the "danger zone"? (I.e. how far away from the wall should I move them until I'm safe?)
Re: the classic "take a photo of your setup" thread
Every room is different unfortunately. Mine are about 8 inches away from the wall, but im not using a desk up against the wall.Sonika wrote:Okay thanks everyone. Re: the classic "take a photo of your setup" thread
just bought a huge old dub desk, 24:8:2, 4 band eq per channel, 48input, 6 aux sends. it was £270 with 2 patchbays and ton of cables (like 48). crazy.

Cables (exceprt)

Part of my all hardware strategy. Far less than i paid for komplete, cubase or ableton, for example...
Im very seriously thinking of getting an 8 track reel to reel tape deck and literally go 20 years, the old dub, basic channel type studio.

That is awesome man. That ep you just released, I'm embarrassed to say this, it needs eq man! IMO!!! Don't hate me!
You uk guys get the sickest deals on used gear. So many people doing music, the gear just flows. Jealous!

Youre quite right;
But, in our defence (!)
Were only just getting going, and the whole wiring/workflow is still being worked out.
They were done, mainly flat, as youve identified to the zoom, which has crappy effects and no individual outputs, so once its recorded, you cant do a lot, but import into cubase and fiddle.
Theyre actually not too bad in the context of 20 year old acid house tunes!
The best two tracks weve done are not included, keeping on lockdown (cringe) for now, and macc is mastering, so will be faaaaaar better than these.
People these days are so used to the "eq and compression and everything on every track and every group and master" sound that everything else does sound, well, crap in comparison. Me and my mate are old enough that the tunes sounds really cool but well aware they will sound gash next to skrillex or whatever.
Cant wait for maccs masters, today or tomorrow !
But yeah, youre completely right. The new desk will add a ton of flexibility, each sound on its own channel, and when i also get the multitrack with outputs, we can do all the box twiddling live, then play off tape and eq/dub reverb/delays off the desk with all the time to refine. It will be awesome.
Plus with the change of the uad ill be able to buy at least one nice compressor.
interesting times.
Wondering if i can start to charge possibly? Ditch the day job? Get 24 tracks of digitial and mixdown via desk to stereo/8 track, or just back down to 24 track, but via desk. All doable.
Cheers

London as it goes, Crouch End. From SOS readers ads.
Its F**KING HUGE.
It really does look photoshopped, like an expanded Spirit folio.
It was a complete bargain. Despite having to drive down from Manchesterish to collect. Good excuse to have a been witha mate in hackney and lament the decline of Shoreditch...
No one wants big old desks anymore. £3.5k when they first came out. Made in britain too, not china, built like a tank.
Cheers

Yeah that desk def colours the sound, warm, bassy, overdriven if necessary. LUSH. 'real' its like you spend forever on plugins trying to get seomthing to sound good, where just plugging it into the desk just works. (I KNOW I PREACH ABOUT THIS! Sorry, just very into it at the mo
Ive spent a good 10-12 years on plugins, including all the best uad stuff. not a noob.
no matter what you do you will sound far more unique on hardware than using the same plugins everyone is using, even if you make youre own presets (LOTS of people dont).
this vid was the final push i needed to go caompletely hardware, a much bigger version of my desk. with 6 sends, and 4 band eq on each channel (2 band eq on the 2nd set of inputs, for a total of 48 ins at once), you can do a huge amount even with a 4 bar loop otr whatever. again not amazing as a peice, overall, but in terms of a process, and actualyl doing something, rather than drawing automation and editing fades etc, its 100% pure WIN.

yeah i deffinitly know what you mean, actually having something physical gives you a different type of inspiration and more of a feel for the music.
Id love to get myself a desk at some point and switch over to hardware but i just have no space at the moment and funds are tight aswell..but i guess if you can get something like that for so cheap then it would make it much easier to create the space haha

I stripped the screw on my monitor stand the day I opened the box, and haven't used them since.Eridu wrote:Sonika wrote:

they are definitely too low. ideal height for monitors, when you`re sitting is 100 - 110 cm. average desk height is 70 cm. You cant go wrong with buying speaker stands, you can hardly destroy them and can basically use them forever and in any studio setup you have in the future.
I would pull the desk out and place the monitors behind the desk on the speaker stands.
Good monitor placement is symmetrical from one side of the wall to the parallel wall. You want your set up right in the middle. If you have a more rectangular room, set up your monitors so the sound will blast down the longer dimensions of your room. Also, I'm pretty sure you should pull your monitors forward unless you have a wall very close in back of you.

nah, I live in the hills so it's cold, with lots of vegetation and a few monkeys and birds. I can see the slums from my living room window, though. I'm waiting my cdjs to arrive (cdjs > dvs) so I can get some nice pictures of everything.ehbrums1 wrote:Hircine im pretty interested in seeing your setup..
