when i was talking about the music being stupid right now, its because there's a massive pile of similarity in so many sounds being used and the tunes being pushed by a lot of dj's. 5 years ago, nearly everyone in this music was off on their own paths. influences and textures from all kinds of directions. 140bpm being played up against 70bpm halftime, and hip hop sounds being mashed up against 2step/UKG basslines. all of that is fading away now. all the beauty of the mashed up genres. as i said to a friend the other day on aim in regards to this thread, "most 2009 dubstep is easy to describe". why would anyone want to make music without mystery? something to consider...

After reading through 13 pages of longwinded posts basically repeating the same things over and over again, here's my 2 cents, concised:
There are 2 major motivations behind producing music. The first is to make music for money's sake, and the second is to make music for art's sake.
You can have great production skills, a crack marketing team and the #1 banger on beatport, and still get no respect from other artists if you think like this:
"Hey, if I crossed X artist's bass with Y artist's beats, and promote through W and V, I can make Z amount of dollars."
I'm not saying tricking people out of their money isn't a skill, but its not art you're selling at that point, its a product which people buy as a result of being brainwashed. The true artist thinks like this:
"I'm gonna sit down to make some music, lets see what happens."
And at the end of the day the measurement of artistic talent _is_ objective. And the measure is not how many units you sell but rather how many future artists did you inspire to make _more_ music... THATs how the cycle continues, and thats THE ONLY WAY it continues.
In this day and age, fuck sales, because if sales mattered in terms of musical inspiration then dubstep would all sound like a cross between Rusko, Lil Jon and Brostep.
And finally, stupid people will always like stupid music. Hence there will always be that market. Their brains just cannot interpret complex rhythms, beats or polyphony, so they take the other, easier roads in getting their jollies.

MAKE US GROW STRONGER !!! don't you know, were all the same. a ying and a yang. the more rusko / benga / reso ..ect. bang out sick ass beats (or whatever style you enjoy out of dubstep) the more the (yang) is gonna do the same..... its just musical nature. go with it. if you don't like it ...deal with it ..don't be negative on creativity.
I agree with cyrusfx about sitting down and writing whatever happens. i do it all day. dnb/ electro. hiphop. experimental.. .it's all for the love and creativty. AND ...

Then surely you love this style of music that is entirely based upon drop drop drop drop and disposable dubplates for single play use... you know... Soundclash, Biggest system, Biggest drop...
I don't need to read the Grapes of Wrath to have enough cultural understanding to critique the Depression Era swing and Ragtime movement. All I need is to know whether or not I nod my head and tap my foot. I don't need someone who was in FDR's cabinet to tell me about ragtime or whether or not I like it. It's far more elitist to assume that having knowledge of music somehow makes your opinion on the tune more valid than how it makes my head feel.
BTW, I come from a House and Techno background myself... I prefer a mix to the drop rewind fade without mixing method that certain people prefer. The harder than hard is not my cup o tea really, though some of it is pretty dope.

That is a god damn lie.
There is good music and there is bad music. Eye of the beholder. Since the 2nd note was played, we have been critical about music. Do you love a tune? More than another tune? Are there tunes you don't like?
Without bad tunes, there is no such thing as a good tune. And there are some great tunes. There are also tunes that are total garbage. Every time I pick up a piece of vinyl, even like random crate digging at shops I have to be reminded that at some point, someone really believed that this was their masterpiece. It was their best effort. For that, I can respect tunes that I don't necessarily like all that much.
Then there are tunes that are a blatant pisstake, and it's hard to respect that as much... it's not a "best effort" or someone's soul laid bare for all to see and hear... it's a joke and should be treated as such. The hardness, tempo, etc... are immaterial in this.
