remarc smashes it! Started collecting more jungle recently, some right gems about proper cheap. The big ones can cost a fair bit though; was looking at remarc and tom and jerry's back catalogue on discogs and they bit too pricey for me atm.
Here's new jungle label out of notts.. First 12" release coming soon.
ave a gander:
pkay wrote:for me the problem was it was not really a part of the drum and bass scene as a whole.... it really was more a-kin to the breakcore scene. A lot of people tried to force it to mesh with drum and bass socially and it just didnt go. I can say having been knee deep in drum and bass for a decade at the time, when I started doing promotions with Mindsaw and became friends with everyone involved, socially the artists didnt really mesh with the drum and bass scene. The people and fans of the music relating to the darker/skully shit, didnt honestly enjoy drum and bass as a whole. They werent neccessarily enspired by drum and bass. They were this newer generation of folks who were inspired by breakcore and hardcore music.
Not out here. I know a lot of things in the states are different scene wise, but drum & bass (in general) and hardcore are growing more and more into the same scene with parties like PRSPCT and before that Smackdown. Not that any of the neuro stuff or more ambient side of drum & bass is involved, but these days hardcore, crossbreed, skullstep and techstep in general are on the same bills and in the same scene. You'll have Optical, Black Sun Empire sometimes even Nosia sharing the stage with Hellfish, Akira and N-Vitral. We're also getting more and more dnb on the big hardcore festivals (Limewax and Switch Technique are playing Dominator.. which is mainstream hardcore).
It's kind of like we're in some sort of transitional scene where 'crossbreed' is sort of an identifiable sound that meshes hardcore and dnb and is slowly turning into something else entirely.
I'm kind of surprised it's still different out there? I know that at least Darkmatter is growing towards crossbreed/industrial/skull. I thought they were pretty representative of what's going on there.
Breakcore was always a scene of its own that 'borrowed' musicians from different corners (dubstep, hardcore, dnb and jungle) or is booked in the small room with all the squat and punk kids, while hardcore and dnb are in the big rooms. It's really pretty dead.

Man, I miss the drop bass network days where acid techno and breakcore lived in harmony. I missed its hay day, but was lucky enough to make it to the last even furthur...oh my stars, the most memorable party I've ever went to. 30 bucks for 3 days of wildness...you just don't see that anymore...

JEALOUS. I don't know much about the parties, just that they were probably insane. DBN (and SixSixtySix) is one of my favorite labels and the dark/acid/industrial techno and breakcore from Canada/the Midwest from that time is great. The Schizophrenia parties seem to be like.. the last remnant of that shit but even those are over, I think.

agreed.
And yeah, have a friend that went to the last schizophrenia in Detroit & it got raided by swat and shut down within the first hour.

Hahaha, I read about that story. It's a shame. Those line-ups were crazy.
Such a great night , old school rave vibes all the way! Trax and Nucleus pretty much cover the entire spectrum from breakbeat to jungle to early d&b (and the odd raver). Kabon Kid goes in hard from start to finish!

nice, missed KK's set.
Ruffskool is pretty much the only organisation crew that will have me marking a date months upfront without knowing the line-up and actually living up to it.
the party was nice

Spot on! The venue for the last two editions hasn't been the best imho. A bit small and too many windows hehehe. But I suppose within Antwerp it's a good and financially interesting deal to do these parties in a youth club. And it is an accesible yet remote location (meaning no trouble with the cops) Looking forward to edition 9!
If only there was more love for this genre outside the bigger cities (especially Antwerp is a big hub for Jungle), I wouldn't hesitate to offer the guys our venue but there's simply not enough people still in it here in the countryside.

old school jungle, any substyle, doesn't get much love in Belgium, everyone slightly involved knows that.
if you look at the state of the music just a few years ago, where nearly every city had at least one person/group/anything organising parties,
to the point now where a strictly old school line-up is not encouraging to organise anymore....
and even a few years ago, I've been asked if I would play r&b at a jungle party, and I can remember a friend of me getting both middle fingers in the face because they couldn't stand listening '94 stuff while waiting for the breakcore/hardcore act after our set.
comes to show how random public attention can be sometimes.
about Ruffskool, I don't mind the venue change, I'm just not sure about the sound, although it seemed better the second time.
btw, if you got a venue at your disposition, why not write down your fav. dj's and form a little line-up yourself, get in touch with these peeps and organise it from there?
there's plenty of good jungle dj's in Belgium, I think it would be healthy if you would put in your own approach (rather than give out organisation control), plus, there's more people with jungle in their crates than people who play it out, counting in retired dj's, versatile dj's with their main focus on other music, younger dj's getting into it without too many options to play out in the current atmosphere...

Great idea. I'd totally be up for that & make the trip. And I'm from deep down south

Well in all fairness:
The problem for us lies not in filling line-ups with (Belgian) DJ's, our venue too is a Youth Club (though very modern and up to date sound/light fx wise). And I believe one of my partners even asked the RUFFSKOOL crew to do an edition out our place.
We've had Havoc and Karbon Kid along with the Deadcop crew (Wasp, DOC, System D, BAZ) over in the past, but this may already be 5 years ago and as you say this scene has been in decline for a few years now. Perhaps decline is the wrong word, but stagnant: the same old heads everywhere with only a limited amount of young people finding their way to the style.
So the problem is, we can get them to play over here, but we can't guarantee they'll be playing infort of more than 10-20 people you know. Even if you get the promo team behind it and do all the necesesary stuff: the kids here are only interested in tear-out or netsky. And the older heads who you'd see at parties like RUFFSKOOL are mainly situated in the cities and I doubt they'd come all the way down here for an all BELGIAN line-up. And then you have the odd music afficianado or symphatiser.
As a Youth Council member, I believe that as partially state funded organiser, it is our duty to keep culture like this alive and that the budgets we get from the government should be spent on subculture and alternative culture for youths, regardless of whether or not you're always going to make a profit/don't turn out red numbers when organising something. Rather than spending it on your average "Gatfuiven". But you need some volounteers as well: people who sit at the door, serve drinks...within the capacity of a youth club, we need the youths themselves to be interested in doing that at a jungle night. We could do it ourselves, but then we'd just be profiting from the system: then we might as well fix up a standard club venue and be prepared to take all the costs and possible profits/losses.
That's where our focus is at right now you know, persuade some of the youngsters to get on board and hope that within a year or two that new generation will be putting up nights themselves. That's the current ambition.
If that is sorted, we can move out and organise our own events at more public venues. Right now, with a few of us in financial uncertainty or under pressure (starting family life, new housing etc), it's good to have the structure of a youth club behind your nights: you get funding, you get volounteers, you don't have to deal with all the costs. This changes of course when you move out and all responsibility falls on your shoulders: you need dedicated people for that who can free up some money. I hope to be able to finally organise something for myself in the next couple of years.
