if i ever see any of the tunes i love on wax, i pony up on the spot, why not check it out first, test it out on the crowd? i love so much music, if i paid for all of it, i'd be broke all the time. beside dropping tunes that are not widely available is a very good feeling.
I know I said I was done with this thread, but I definitely don't agree with playing pirated stuff out, moreso if you're getting paid for it! There's pirating stuff for home listening, then there's pirating stuff and making money off the back of it.

This argument that downloading music is too expensive, I am poor, I'd be broke etc is weak as fuck

You guys have to learn how to have a constructive argument. I may not agree with what Allnightdaydream is saying, but that's what makes his argument all the more interesting, because he IS consistently providing well thought out, logical arguments. And you guys just say he's being obtuse for using sources.

They don't and he doesn't.

It's the pointlessness of arguing from differing moral frameworks. If you don't consider an action in contravention of your own morality then arguing the toss with someone who does is pointless.

Sorry for forcing you to read. The one line it took up on the board must've really stressed you out. Out to you for your patience at this testing time. :Q:

its not always horrible to consider other people's POVs/moral frameworks

i admit a lot of responses here made me reconsider. I'm still against theft, and it still has mostly to do with the fact that i make a living off intellectual property. But there's all kinds of scenarios too, that i wasn't aware of. So i don't think there's anything wrong with this thread per se.
There've been much worse. remember the dma's

Was kinda car-crash reading - had to rubber-neck at what the fuck y'all had to talk about for this long. Then there was the added intrigue of it being shifted from here to general and back again.
Also, this thread has been done at least three times in recent months but this one got the furthest.

Reason enough to read.

Don't be such a sarcy tnuc.

DSF would just be a nicer place if there wasn't half as much moaning about stuff that is easily avoidable by just not clicking a link.

You know this discussion has been done before, you know how it would end up (hence why I dropped out), you knew what to expect. Despite what some people think, it's not cool to moan about DSF haha. It's a great place.

There are plenty reports.
And the one that everyone from the Pro-filesharing side always comes with first is the one from Harvard in 2004, based largely on mainstream barcoded/soundscan music. They reveal absolutely NOTHING about filesharing independent underground music. Most vinyl based indie music is not tabulated or barcoded, so the test groups being used for 95% of these "reports" don't matter. You cannot compare filesharing a britney spears single and filesharing an underground indie dubstep single. They're diametrically different, and the former relies on exposure from major radio and multi million dollar promotion. When you fileshare an established dubstep artist, we're talking about shoestring budgets. The effects of a dubplate being ripped and leaked early means that the producer probably breaks even if that at all.

If you want to justify stealing, claiming you have loads of reports that represent filesharing in relation to dubstep, you need to link us. Otherwise, its a house of cards.

All fair points. I completely agree, DSF is a great place, which is why such threads tend to irk me a little. I wouldn't have an issue at all if it wasn't for the fact that this thread has majoritively consisted of posts from people who have discussed this before (and got nowhere) and some guy who's avatar is 'the troll' ( -q- )

It just comes down to morality - there is no (truly) right or wrong answer, just opinions, which is why i'm amazed it got this far.
You're absolutely right though, I should have known better than to keep clicking on it.

Addendum - I hope you don't think (or at least don't care) that there was any malice behind my use of the word 'tnuc'. Was just light-hearted.

Guess these threads go on so much because people see how much work goes into stuff, and then some bod just thinks "I'm having that for free" haha. Anyway, I'll let others duke this one out! :Q:

that's one part of the pro-piracy argument thats just void. 5 years ago, i would say it had some grounds, but now...no way. there's absolutely no grounds left to stand on in terms of not being able to sample/hear music you really want to check out first, before buying.
Plenty of old vinyl only releases are only on youtube or up for pirate on the internet. Seeing as you hate unauthorized Youtube uploading channels, I'll exclude those. Given that, where can I legally listen to, say, Loefah - Jazz Lick?
listen on DSF or listen on youtube on your own? yes, DSF bans youtube collections, chiefly because we've had labels and producers come at us over the years complaining that these channels are getting adsense money off their hard work! youtube collection channels and their motivations to collect huge archives of tunes is shady at best, when they run adsense on each video. again, its entitlement.

your argument here is silly, as jazz lick is on youtube right now. you can hear the entire tune. its a classic that is worth the money tracking down on vinyl. Are you going to now argue that Loefah's not going to get the money if you buy it on discogs? i love that one too.

how many hoops do people need to jump through to prove to the world that their hard drive collection is more important than supporting the community financially?
