When I'm making tracks, most of the sounds I will use I already have as samples/patches, so it's all about getting a melody, structure etc. From start to finish for me to be really happy with a track would take around 10 hours maybe, even more if I really feel the tune. 20 hours max I think.
Im on FL btw

it takes me forever to finish songs, partly because ive only finished 2 since switching to ableton, but i think i just haven't found my groove quite yet!

I always got good sounds out of the semi modulars like Absynth, Zebra and Crystal.

The DAW I've been using is Ableton.

Nothing but nothing makes you get better at finishing songs like a deadline - the samplepack competitions here singlehandedly turned me from that guy with 8 billion cool loops but no finished songs to that guy that has 7½ billion cool loops and a bunch of frustratingly imperfect songs. :6:

i rarely finish a song in one sitting. i'll usually start a few projects on one day, work on them for a bit, and finish a whole bunch on another day. it's good to have fresh ears.

that said, to all the people having trouble finishing songs, don't worry about if it's perfect or not. when you feel like you can't think of anything that needs to be added/subtracted/changed, just render it and move on to something else. it's good to finish lots of stuff, even if it stinks, it's what makes you better.

ya def agree takes more then one sitting for sure. even if i think i might of completed on one sitting (would have to be like a 8-12 hour sat or sunday session) i will always still go back and wanna edit after finished cause i always think of somthing fresh to put on or learned a new way to play around on daw (ableton) to help out my song. but other then that it def depends on a bunch of things to determine how long the song is gonna take. usually if i start a song on the same kinda genre music type im comfortable with it might only take a week few days maybe to finsish but if its not somthing im familar with making (another genre type of music) it could take a few weeks to month!! i my self hate saying i have a track finished until i think its perfect....witch seems to be inpossible but thats the best part! being able to go back and edit. the outcome and journey of making the song is what really maters.

^ still depends, i mean ive finished tunes in less than an hour and come back to some weeks or even years later and finished them then. theres no set structure, it completely depends on the individual.

Ranging from 1 hour to 3 weeks. Ambient always goes the fastest because i have the most awesome tools and tricks for that.

3 hours - 6 months

I usually have most of a track down within the first day, and pretty much the full arrangement, then I'll spend days, weeks, or months tweaking it. Sometimes it needs no tweaking though!

How long does it take you to produce a track?

Post by dividedbyzero » Sun Dec 02, 2012 8:06 pm

General Question for you all.

how long does it take for you to make a tune from start to finish?
or how long does it take to get a general demo idea for e.g. 16 bars of a drop.
