That's exactly why I love the Mercury. Its what sets it apart from most other piece of junk awards show. The majority vote (ie Home voting, popular consensus etc) is nearly always not ever 'the right choice'. Thats why the pop charts are so shit, most people dont know what the fuck they're talking about. That's why underground music is so vital. Elitism is the answer unfortunately, even if we dont agree with the end result. How else would Roni Size gain recognition over the top of Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and Radiohead? How else would the talent of the likes of Badly Drawn Boy or Anthony and the Johnsons be showcased?
Yeah, the winner of this sort of thing is always a toss up, but as far as I'm concerned the point of it isn't to somehow objectively decide what "the best album of the year" is so that if anyone's wondering whether Elbow are better than Radiohead they can find out authoritatively, it's more about drawing the attention of people who don't follow blogs or the music press to some areas of music they might not have heard on daytime radio 1. And if anyone's going to flag up a bunch of albums and say "hey, even if you're not really into this sort of thing, these are worth checking", then I guess it's going to have to be people whose job is basically listening to new music all the time.

I think the shortlist matters a lot more than the eventual winner, basically.

people keep saying he couldn't be bothered to show up, but if i am not mistaken, you actually have to pay to attend even if you're nominated. and its not cheap either.

Is that true? If so changes what I typed a bit. I assumed it was a paid for industry piss-up.

Well, I had a look before (could of been the Mobos actually) and its £250 per person on a table of 12. Actually I think it was the Mobos :S But isn't Burial nominated for that too?

Just a reminder that the extended version of the Mercury Prize is on at 11.35pm on BBC2 tonight. That's in about an hour and a half from the time of this post.

It'll be interesting to see that Burial video in full which we got a brief glimpse of the other night, and also what kind of reception and reaction he got from the crowd there even though he wasn't there in person.
