be thankful for your blessings. we live in a world that changes for the worse every second. think about what's important, and what's really not important and use your energy and time to help other people, and not just for yourself for a change.
Dubway and the mods work damn hard - deserve a bloody holiday if you ask me. They don't owe any of us anything - but we owe something to them.
That's just my humble opinion

lol.dubway wrote:dsf wrote: Like the empty space before a drop, the past few days were a dramatic pause for deliberate effect. Reactions have been mixed; positive and negative, public and private, opportunistic and confused. An indefinite timeframe of downtime was specified, yet interpreted by some as final. The questioning call of 'why?' has resounded. We obviously left the finality of it all a little open-ended: for a while we didn't know how long and we didn't want people to know. This wasn't an especially pragmatic move. It was one to instigate a response.
Birthdays are a good time to take stock, evaluate your life and think about the direction you're going in. Closing the forum for a few days has allowed us all to do this. This was the main point of the closure. It was a unanimous decision but all the moderators had their own reasons for going ahead with it as well. We felt the need to do it. Everyone has had the chance to think about what the forum means to them, which we think is a good thing. What if it was the end?
In all honesty, we were getting a headache from the constant noise, so we hit pause in an attempt to try and make people realize what is important to them. Perhaps we failed. Perhaps not. Ending it for good would have been an interesting move but this was never going to be permanent as it's far better to continue, forging the best environment we can for this music to be discussed and disseminated.
The value of any forum is determined by its users. This was always the strength of this forum in the past and perhaps now it is its weakness. This is both a matter of scale and success. Like the sound, 'The Community' has mutated and fragmented and is an entirely different entity today than it was in 2005. This is fine of course; this wasn't an attempt to change this. This wasn't a wheel up to try and take things back. We didn't think it would return things to how they were in the forum's infancy. It wasn't an elitist move. Yes, we would like more decorum and less idiocy but we know this is the internet; a place where currency is information which flows continuously often at the expense of quality. We paused the flow. It was a moment to reflect. All the moderators have and we hope you have too.
We realise that DSF is the online nucleus of the scene and to many away from the more established geographical hubs of the sound, the lifeblood of it. We know it is valued and we just want it to be the best possible place it can be for our users. This forum would not exist without the music or its users. But our users; DJs, producers, promoters and fans are able to shape it by their actions. 3 years in and it's hard to think that this forum has been anything less that catalytic in the music's development. Not specifically its existence but its function; what it has facilitated and what it has fostered - this international community.
So welcome back, make what you will of the past few days and if you haven't already, please download the BunZer0 3rd birthday mix and remember we're all here because of the music.
nice one, glad to see the forum back in operation. tbh it being gone, with the "closed indefinitely" phrase in mind, I started thinking about my own local music community a lot more. Over here in Canada music like this isn't exactly "top of the pops" and European forums like this make it easy for me and my cohorts to forget that its not as popular around here as we might want it to be.
In short the forum being closed may have been a positive force for change in my local community as it made the room for improvement a lot more obvious, and brought back that "spreading the virus" mentality of old!
To lightly touch on the meat of this thread though... actually... on second thought, I'm not touching it with a 50 foot pole.

The break itself I couldn't care less about, if the mods are after a little time off or anything similar then by all means. Its in that way that were all indebted to the mods on here for time/effort etc. However, the idea of that break being for self evaluation or something I think is borderline disgusting. I don't enter into a music community to be in essence told that im going about my life wrong (I know thats extreme, but if were just talking black/white logic).
Im not angry or anything btw, and standard got no beef with anyone up high. You do a cracking job. Just missed the target this time imo.

Dubstepforum is the best online dubstep portal that I know of.
To lose such a useful tool would actually be a blow to the global dubstep scene. No this site doesn't constitute 'the dubstep scene' by itself, but I bet that the members here make up a sizable portion of the entire global dubstep scene!
To be honest, I'm seriously considering forgetting entirely about DSF and just doing my own thing now. I've spent untold days trying to create posts that help people understand music production better, if only so the community can benefit as fresh tunes come out!
____________________________________________________________
But by pulling a stunt like the one at the weekend, my faith and trust in Dubway & co has been fatally diminished.
If Dubway and co are tired of running this site, surely it would be better for the global dubstep scene to get others on board to help run the site than to pull everything?!!
Why waste such a great resource and meeting place?
For this site to work, the admin needs to work with the users not against them. For instance, this thread was posted but never acted upon.... (http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t ... highlight=) Why not?
To Dubway and co, if you are tired of running this site, do the global dubstep scene one last favour and get others to run the site! That way, all the time and energy people have invested in this forum will not have been in vein. You guys can go chill and do whatever it is you need to do with your lives....
____________________________________________________________
Just by way of example, if there were more mods and updated software, threads like the ones below could be merged thus creating a better resource for dubsteppers yet!

or

etc etc etc etc etc etc yawn....

So what's it going to be?
Are we going to see a more democratically motivated admin crew or are you going to pull the plug once and for all?
Tbh, I'm so upset at the thought of losing such a great resource for the music I love that I'm willing to help speed up the demise of this place.... (if that's the way it's going....) I've plenty of other goals to work towards, so the loss of this place will be only temporarily lamented.

DSF is a key part of the scene, for a lot of newcomers its an entry point and for general growth that's key.

Ooooooooooooo!!! Get You! How naive is this? Show me the moderators coining it from their website, and I'll show you a crap website. Or a porn one.Misk wrote:maybe dont flaunt how amazing it is that you volunteer then.seckle wrote:maybe we've never been about making money. maybe music and making money aren't a happy marriage.Misk wrote:maybe you should figure out how to make some money then.seckle wrote:the forum has been offline for about 8 days in 3 years. thats 8 out of 1095. websites 10 times as big as ours don't have that kind of record, and we're all volunteers here. unpaid.

But seriously, romantic viewpoints aside, money income from a site like this can go back into it, to further advance the features, services and the scene itself.
48 grand aint bad, and doa is a very good framework for such a resource.

ew.
for christ's sake, it's not like those of us who are miffed are saying there is some massive dubstep cabal that's gonna change the course of human history or anything.
i just believe there is a massive gap between word and deed that no one wants to admit, and i think it reeks.
glad the forum is back, missed it, think the whole thing was bullshit.
done.
