I don't think Mason did a good job of quoting that. Those types of sentences are usually written before or after a long section which explains what the self is and what relation is and so forth. Think of it as "What can I say that is true?"

Started reading David Hume on Suicide, one of the Penguin Great Ideas books, although I found it interesting I just couldn't get myself in the mood to read it so stopped about half way through.

Gunna start some of Michael Connellys books soon I think.. or read Requiem for a Dream.

yeah i did quote it unfairly, its pretty much at the beginning of the book and i think he will spend a fair bit of time explaining it. Also it has been translated from danish(?) so it might have made more sense in danish. also not as bad as some of the stuff hegel comes out with lol

Mason do you mostly read existentialist philosophy? I've read the Stranger by Camus but thats about it.. anything, relatively easy, you'd recommend? I hear Kierkegaard is a bit difficult... although I intend to attempt Hegels Phenomenology of Spirit so I guess I'll give anything a shot. Was gunna give Nietzsches Anti-Christ a read but never got round to it.

Hegel interests me mainly because he hugely influenced Kierkegaard and Marx, 2 people who went in entirely different directions.

nietzsche reads are always very entertaining

Yeah i've only really got into it in the last year or so. I am more interested in pessimism so i started with "Pessimism:
Philosophy, Ethic, Spirit" by dienstag, which nicely and quite simply outlines camus, nietzsche, Schopenhauer, unamuno, cioran, Rousseau and several others' philosophies. I would definitely recommend it.

Then otherwise i would recommend the myth of sisyphus by camus, nausea by Sartre and the essay and aphorism book penguin put together by Schopenhauer. Havn't read any Nietzsche yet but beyond good and evil is on my to read list.

I have sort of started with more recent philosophers and am slowly moving back haha i think i will probably read more of hegel after kierkegaard.

nietszche is not pessimist at all. more of the opposite

Nice one I'll check that out. Myth of Sisyphus has been on my list ever since I finished The Stranger and I've got Nausea and The Age of Reason by Satre.. just find it hard to read a real book now I'm so use to reading on my kindle. Probably take them both on holiday with me as kindles are gash in the sun.

Got "Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius", a biography of Wittgenstein, a while ago but I've yet to start that either.. over 700 pages I think. I tend to buy more books than I can read lol.

does anyone know any good academic reading on ideas regarding inner motivations? like say a church supports a certain political party's view, an investigation into why they might be supporting this as opposed to the other party's view

The final book in the trilogy finally came out, so started reading this. Almost done, not much happens as it's mostly scene-setting but good read so far. A little more serious than typical Pratchett fair, a little less serious than typical Baxter stuff. Good mix.
