All apples should be fucking crunchy.

I'm trying to think of the exception, but you're probably right. Some varieties definitely seem to be less reliable than others though.... anything with "Delicious" in the name is worth avoiding. Whatever bastard named Golden Delicious really can fuck the fuck off. No taste, shitty thin skin, goes soft easily yet has the most appetising name out of all its apple brethren. Tricky little fucker.

Honestly, I think Braeburn is the best apple. It's almost inbetween Green and Red... has the bite, the crunch... and if you give it a squeeze before buying you can pretty much guarantee it won't be one of those mealy, powdery bastards.

A good Granny Smith probably wins overall, but there are too many that are too soft or too bitter. I learnt to beware the dark green fuckers with the huge white spots as a nipper.

Shouts to the good old English Cox as well. Great flavour but TOO SMALL... almost always get a mouthful of pips after an over-enthusiastic first bite.

Russetts seem like a great idea, but in reality they can fuck off.
