Where to begin. The thing is with Skrillex, is that from a producers point of view, you have to give him credit for the quality of production that goes into his music as well as the vast array of samples. When I say "quality" I am referring to mastering of sound levels etc. and the fact that most of his vids on youtube are HD which makes a huge difference in clarity when listening online. I also heard he's no.1 on beatport which to any artist would be a commendible achievement, regardless of the genre. I don't really know who listens to his music because I don't hear people playing locally, nor do I go to the places where he is being played (hopefully) so I guess it's mainly an overseas thing because everyone I know chooses Skream over Skrillex even if they don't like Dubstep.

When I first heard Trolley Snatcha in like 2008 I was like OMG this is just a bunch of noise but then as I started to mix on Virtual Dj I slowly realised that it's just his own spin on Dubstep. I really liked "Pass Me By" not only did it include Dub deriven drums but it also had that deep bassline to it that sits nicely with my sub. I purchased my sub December 2008, the best thing I've ever bought! Then came Borgore in 2009 and I was like OMG WTF this is just a bunch of noise and I still think that with a lot of his tunes are but "Cry Me a River" has got a hold on me and at least I can skank to Borgore. If you know about Borgore's history then you know he came from a Heavy Metal band which sort of excuses his insane sounds because there are Dubstep drum patterns underneath. "Gorestep" was an acceptable term because it created a sub-genre without displacing the original. Then came along Skrillex in 2010 and by 2011 had somehow destroyed that global concept of Dubstep, it still amazes me that some people think Skrillex can be placed in the same boat as other Dubstep artist. His drum patterns are not Dubstep. I know, I am a producer. I see his name all over the place on Youtube in Dubstep arguments, it's getting ridiculous.

My minor issue is that a year ago if I put "sk" into the Youtube the first thing that came up was Skream, not I gotta type "skre" just to find him. Talk about doubling efforts. My main issue with Skrillex is not with his success, nor with his money or fame, it is solely down to the fact that his music is polluting the essence of Dubstep. This may be a controversial statement to those fans of Skillex but please remember, it is only my opinion.

Who am I to say he's polluting the essence, how do I even know what the essence of Dubstep is, well for a starters i've been there from the beginning and I think that qualifies me enough to say that Skrillex does not make Dubstep. Although I don't personally like his music, I'm not saying what he makes is a bunch of crap, it just not my cup of tea. Not only that, I can't hear the Dub or 2Step influence in the final product. I hear more of a Electric or Techno influence which poses the question, should it be categorised as Dubstep, I think not. Plus wiki says he produces makes Electronic Dance music.

Digital Mystikz still make music. Pinch still makes music. The world keeps on turning. Let everybody listen to the guy who'll be flavour the next few months, then they'll forget about him. Nobody talks about the Spice Girls anymore. Just keep appreciating the tunes and let them bubble under in dark basements or warehouses. As long as you keep that music alive, nobody will be able to take it from you, certainly not some people who don't have a clue about dance music, and don't care either way.

Just curious...how long has Skrillex been on the fame train? bout a year I guess?

Yeah he is EDM, and wikipedia actually classifies him as complextro, which I think is a very suitable categorization. It's basically a subgenre of electro house where people take a maximalist approach and most complextro sounds like Skrillex but 4x4 usually 128 bpm
So honestly I'd just say he makes 140 bpm halftime complextro.

I honestly am not partial to his music myself, but I have no hate for him personally. He never described himself as dubstep, and he's just doing his thing.

Yeah, he's a really terrible DJ, but he's a great producer imo looking at it from a technical perspective.

imo he over-compresses everything but besides that he's just gone and decided to take the whole emerging maximalist agenda in a different direction, and we have no right to hate on him for it, even if we really don't like his music. Yeah, we all love to rag every once in a while, but at the end of the day I have respect for him.

One problem I do have (not his fault) is that where I'm from, USA, everyone thinks dubstep=Skrillex sounds. It's grated on me more and more as I've progressed through these last few months. People have every right to like that stuff, but they shouldn't just throw out statements like "Skrillex is the god of dubstep" before they've actually gotten some perspective.

I think it just comes down to the Bastardization of EDM in general..... Look at what we are dealing with here now.... The "rave" is mainstream, grade 9 kids popping a bunch of pills and going to a rave with 70,000 other people put on by multi million dollar companies is socially acceptable these days. The same thing for dubstep can be said for techno or house music, where most kids worship people like swedish house mafia, avicci, tiesto, david guetta ect ect while real house and techno gets left in the dust..... but at the end of the day most people are stupid and ignorant in the first place, that is why stuff like britney spears and justin beiber can become so popular, where it is there image driving their sucuess due to smart marketing and not their talent(in which non of these people write or produce this stuff themselves)

We dont have to look at it so negatively overall, there will always be the underground, perhaps it will get even stronger because of this mainstream crap, it'll lead some people to the real stuff...I don't think it's actually diminishing anything
