sup dudes.

im working on this track now. not to sure how to end it. and i dont really know where to fit bass in. my latency on this midi out to usb is ridonkeylips, so bass line isnt lined. but you can hear the chord progression im going for.

Any comments/criticism very welcome

Rubber
Rubber(LTUK) - "Joanna"

plus:
+had me from the beginning! solid intro
+splendid panning
+false drop bass intro nicely done
+good automation
+ambience oscillation and pitch bending was a nice touch for sure
+bang up job on the ending there!

advice:
-thinking the first big drop needs a more unique bass, sounds good but could stand out a tad more
-first drop feels a little more than just beat/wub
-if you changed the second big drop oscillations up, with a slower initial, could be massive
-careful the mix doesnt sound too dry, a solid sub bass with some resonance would spice it up for sure

overall:
=fun! classic sound and nice flow, your intro is super solid and ear-catching.. for me i need something a little more unique as far as a drop wub goes but i'm extremely picky so dont take that comment to heart too much.. good production! hope to hear more from ya

much love :w:
Hey thanks for the advice man, I'll get on to it asap. Checked out your Myspazz, your tunes are sweet man. Specially like "Umm" - it's got a wicked Engine Earz feel to it... Only thing I would say is that the hats are a tad soft for my liking after the drop. Thirsty Android is awesome too - not only do I like it but it sounds professionally produced too :D

a feedback would be great
thanks for your time..
Thierry le DJ - "What a DoDo"

plus:
+always good to review a Thierry track, know i'm in for something crisp... and no comments included about getting signed this time!
+horns are well placed, and add a weird major flare to the track that took me by surprise
+clever bongo work
+'swampy' melody line

advice:
-horns are a wee bit hot in the mix
-seems to rely on different instruments for variation, which is fine but those four notes got pretty stale towards the end with that vibrato synth constantly plugging away at them
-breaks are a tad long.. just a tad tho
-could either use a big drop or be cut in half time-wise, i think
-the 20sec of silence at the end...

overall:
=nice, but sounds like a WIP... personally i like your other tracks, but this can be very good with some spice and variation, or a big drop with a moderately heavy bass to really set the groove

much love :w:

Hey Knell once a again thanks for the feedback you rock!
must take alot of time... but giving feedback also you get to learn what is right and what is wrong BIG UP to knell thanks for your time..

with the track i will try to finish this one soon hopefully by next week am also gonna read up more on melodies as i dont use a midi keyboard only my mouse
i have a keyboard but i cant get use to using it..
i also agree the drop after the break down is really boring will deffenatly work on that..

anyway i also stop thinking about getting sign and just go with the flow..i think i just been getting a little frustrated about it cause i've been into production almost 2yrs and spend alot of time on it each week..

hopefully i will get used to using my midi keyboard i really want to improved,

thanks again for the feedback..
have a great weekend
thanks

GOOD EVENING DUBHEADS

well, i've been in a good new friend's studio all day since this morning (after the last review i did earlier)

and i banged out a quick little SINISTER demo called "InEv" that's now the topmost song on my myspace player... has a bit of an oldschool Caspa vibe mixed with a dose of NASTY and a dash of MALICIOUSNESS  ... so this one's for all you "ThirstyAndroid" fans haha... but no arid robot references in this one, i promise

it's a WIP, really, but i just have to add a little spice and it'll be done so i'm posting it HERE

... besides, the WIP thread is lame bc there's hardly any knellz in there! (just kidding...kinda... :P)

anyway, i'm back to writing reviews now for the rest of the night and i'll get all the ones posted after my last morning post done before i call it a night, so if you get yours posted in here before 10:00pm my time (its 6:10 right now here in LA), i will make sure to cover it...

if not i guess you'll have to wait til tomorrow

anyway, check out the track and gimme a shout as to what you think... you dont have to write a review in Knell style so a "woo!" or "Boooo!" will do for me, just looking for pos/neg feedback... but if you have anything else to add that would be swell too

cheers :D

yep yep, any time man... i truly enjoy connecting with you guys and this is my passion so reviewing is almost second nature.. although my wrists hate me from all this typing on a laptop :?

i know how it goes writing melodies without a keyboard tho, i'm used to a midi keyboard myself but recently i've had to keyroll program everything, which can get oh so tedious... as if Reason4 isnt tedious enough

i really dont mean to rag on you about the signing thing, it's just all of us in here have the same goal (for the most part), and we cant do anything to help you get signed really, unless your track is an absolute banger, but if thats the case it will spread like wildfire no matter what you want to happen to it

keep at it, i know its grueling but one good track can definitely make you, just put the bones of tracks out there and work really hard on the ones you get good reviews of, and things will take off from there!

anyway, im preaching and rambling so ill get back to what im decent at... reviewing

cheers :w:

Would love a Knell style critique on this please Ive had quite good feedback so far but a more detailed critque rather than 'thats sick' would be fantastic

Thanks to Knell for his critique on my Dubarazzi tune :D
So you want a knell style review huh? i think i can manage that

Geeza - "Residue"

props:
+this one is NASTY, borderline angry, i love me some evilStep
+staccato violins add to the menacing overall timbre of this track, so banging intro
+the wub-rise (@ 0:35) is SUPER, the kind of build that makes me clutch my head and spin around in the club, which is the biggest nonVerbal comment i could ever give any DJ/Producer
+Drop is nice and heavy
+flow is sick sick
+ending is so epic, love the dying robot vibe it gives off
+bouncing around panning of the "bass!" vox sample was a nice touch

advice:
-staccato violins are great, but you might want to find a cleaner string sampler if you can, sounds a bit like cartoon dogs barking in the background (i know, im a nutter, but thats the best way i can describe it)
-that rise is INTENSE... i think it needs to be about twice as long, leading into...
-a more pronounced drop. it has all the right flavor so with the right timing it would send the club into shivers
-with the wubs in this track, it seems to be one, the other, or both... i think a nice alteration call/response between the two (or maybe a brand new midrange) would be super nuts for this song!!
-a really cut-out drop would hit really hard since the mix is so hot, people get used to the intensity so cutting the floor out from under them would stagger most...
-the "bass" sample is a little hot in the mix, to my ears

overall:
=this is one track you dont want to take home to mama! just plain EVIL... i think with a few well placed breaks and maybe another new sample here and there would definitely help to increase the variety, since it's a 5:00+ song... and maybe some chaotic (but still rhythmic) LFO automation towards the end .. its really up to you. the only thing i'd really like to hear is a little longer build and more pronounced drop, however as it is right now it would still make most rook producers and dubstep fans wet the bed every night for the next week or so!!

DedMan - "Pick Up"

props:
+intro is like swimming through a foggy swamp, yummy
+those bass drum hits really stand out
+drop is perfectly timed... now i have an example from a forum member to demonstrate what mean by "pronounced drop"
+rises are great (1:22)
+the "pick it up!" sample and the bass that follows (1:24) is... well... :o gold. now thats some solid flow and clever automation
+just. wonderful. should be on pandora.com for the Rusko channel, methinks... the tracks they have on there get stale for me after the 387492342 time i hear them, anyway :P

advice:
-the part of the main riff after 1:24, where the automation goes nuts, is pretty long... almost repeats itself, but i dont think that would matter on an EP or especially in the club.. a false break somewhere in there would solve that
-i was expecting some surprises besides automation tricks in the second drop, but im a picky greedy bastard so if that's too much then dont worry about it
-i personally am not a huge fan of subtractive synths, but you made this one quite listenable and not too dry, just make sure the sub bass has some resonance and 'oomf' to support it so it doesnt leave the listening brain 'high and dry', so to speak
-a deep and different (polysonic preferably) synth coming in at the end of each melody measure would give this track an A+ (in my lunatic grading scale of a brain)

overall:
=ded, you make it very tough to give advice, as your tracks are very well produced, so biggup for that. i really just hope this is helpful, since i really spent most of my listening time with this song bobbing my head and throwing my shoulders into the sides of my chair

i know, i know... you all think knell is starting to lose his mind...

ah, i was waiting for a CtT track...

ChrisTheTiger/Shane-Shu - "Gangster Dread"

props:
+hard for this track not to start out filthy, with that massive beast of a cello to start it off
+nighttime samples add interesting and unique ambience
+nice rasta sample, definitely enjoyed the hell out of that
+very clever beat, snare still on the 3 but high-hats occasionally on the off-beat (well placed in the song) to give it a head nodding vibe... interesting...!
+vocal stretching hits the crowd right during the super breaks
+interesting that you dig on ragga jungle, i felt a hint of that influence in this track

advice:
-the first drop sounds a bit like a build to me, with that growly bass.. would be interesting to see it turn into one... would leave you room to put in an LFO bass in the real drop, if that was the case
-speaking of which, a wub synth at the end of a measure usually never fails, in my book, kinda comes from nowhere and ties dubstep into the vibe... just a comment
-the wub you do have kinda comes out of nowhere, adds to the build but takes away from the flow
-pronounced drops would solve flow issues and push the genre more towards dubstep, however i feel like you're going for more of a progressive feel, which could definitely work if you arranged everything to b-bu-bui-buil-build-break-boom-repriseBoom (hope that makes sense, geez im getting weirder with every review)

overall:
=well i was not disappointed! you have a clever little track here, a little grimey to start and ending in a prog-dancefest... i think with more arrangement and a wub added hear and there (to your taste, if even any at all..) would turn this into a dancing GEM, which i would love to swing to on a loud loud loud system, with such a nod/pulse vibe..

cheers/much love :w:

**EDIT: oh, and make sure you check your audioOut settings with your program/keyboard... one time i worked with a 150ms delay between hitting a key and hearing a note on NativeInstruments Pro-53 synth.... only because the AudioOut settings had it set that way!!!! so pulling a slider down to 20ms (human threshold of delay recognition) solved all latency issues... so years of frustratingly playing out of sync with the track to get the notes to be in-sync were in vain :u:   **

any time good sir!! :w:

the reason those hats are so soft after the drop is...because... well...

...

there are no hats at all in the song "UmmM"!! i created a hat like effect using a combinator! and got too lazy to add real hats to the heavier bits...!!

so... i suck in that regard, i know..

ill get to work on that soon soon, thank you for letting me know that i cant be sneaky and get away with not programming sampled hats on an good ol fashioned reDrum

Rubber
LTUK/Rubber - "Ode to Eight"

props:
+well, this is definitely different, in a good way
+feedback guitar-like intro is nice
+flow works out for the better
+(@2:30)... the lead that comes in is super duper to me! i like the delay/RPG8tion my favorite part of the song for sure
+like how you bring back the intro and some surprises for the fade out
+(1:21-1:22)... attaboy! great idea
+nice random tom/doumbek type samples mixed in the beat, solid touch

advice:
-i agree with CtT about the cymbals, at the beginning up until the drop (0:12-0:55), at least... i think its not really a bad sample its just rhythmically awkward to my ears.. a little better programming and some reverb would tidy them up nicely, but changing the sample couldnt hurt either, i suppose
-bass drum could be a tad fatter for extra drive and pumpin'
-wubz are a little weak for my taste, so they make the drops a little dull (but i could pretty much say that to just about everyone but Mr. Floyd or Excision himself  )
-UNLESS you just want a chill little dirty ditty, which i could definitely get down on
-wish the (2:30) lead wouldnt come and go and stick around for a little longer

overall:
=solid melody, i think with the advice above it would definitely stick out in my mind as a solid groove in the club, i would drop this near the end of the night to convince people that... yes, it aint over yet even tho its 3:45am, you MUST keep dancing

much love :w:

I was thinking about the cut out drop earlier but just couldnt be bothered to do it haha

i dont even know how this tune came to this stage i wanted to make a grime tune believe it or not i spose you can take the producer from dubstep but you cant take dubstep out of the producer.

Once again thanks very much for the review glad you liked the tune

Haha this started out grime? are you serious? well i suppose dubstep as a whole started out as grime as well, look how far we've come now..!

damn, this track is probably the hypest i've heard in so very long, i'd literally give that drop a 9 out of 10 with the right timing...

anyway, no prob, twas a pleasure to do this one, post any others ya want done, ill keep an eye out..
