that movie is good but it's so weird how it doesn't seem like herzog had anything to do with it. rescue dawn was kinda that way too. stylistically speaking.

Seemed a bit hollow really. Once you get past the shock tactics and graphic sexual violence, there's not much to the film.
You could argue that the whole thing is a political statement about Serbia and talk about the theme of victimization but there are far better ways of expressing that than the imagery and content of this film.
There is one scene that really, really made me squirm.
On the plus side, there are some gorgeous women in it and serbian is a sexy language.
it was a bit hollow.
but that doesn't take away from the fact that it was disgusting.
I think it was a good film solely because I'm rarely disturbed, and this one got to me.
I've re-evaluated it and edited my post. Still not quite sure what to make of it.

yeah, only thing that made me think of herzog was the dead crocodile scene and the iguana shots, which were pretty fucking weird. the final shot is pretty great, and cage's confrontation with the two old women is hilarious/disturbing....not really the biggest cage fan but he did an awesome job in this one.
either way, the original bad lieutenant is worth a mention. harvey keitel is fucking gritty in that one.

I loved Herzog's Bad Lietenunt. It's pretty nutty, one of Cage's best performances. Why is it he is so shit in blockbusters but almost always great in indie films?

i have always had a soft spot in my heart for cage since i grew up with shit like raising arizona, peggy sue got married, and valley girl. so for me the dude is a legend no matter what. when he is in a dope film it's right on schedule. and when he's in a bad film, he's collecting paychecks/staying busy. not mad at nick cage at all.

bangkok dangerous left me with a very bad taste in my mouth
it was your average C+ action flick until he started dating the deaf pharmacist. It was just random and stupid
I'm actually kinda interested in that sorcerers apprentice movie.

Cage was good then went down hill. That scientology propaganda film he did was terrible... still can't dislike the guy though, he's one of those actors who I trust to put on a solid performance. He's like a reliable car, you know what you're getting even if it's not the best.

knowing is not scientology propaganda. hubbard was a kabbalist. scientology is based on real stuff.

laughing makes you look like an idiot. l. ron hubbard ran with jack parsons and aleister crowley. they were all members of Golden Dawn and eventually Thelema. Scientology is rooted in kabbalah.

scientology started off with good intentions, but has been completely corrupted over the years

I watched part 1 and 2 of this over past few nights...
Part 1 is absolutely excellent. I think it's close to a perfect film. It's jam packed full of action, and watching someone's rise is always better than watching their fall. Part 2 is a lot slower and mostly just Mesrine getting caught by the cops over and over while he's on the run until he meets his inevitable brutal end. Cassel's best performance, even better than La Haine. Feel's like he completely threw himself into becoming Mesrine and really believed in the film.
his autobiography is brilliant "L'instinct de mort". i loved it. and its great because you dont know what happens next (well aside from what is generally known in france about him), i'm really looking forward to watching the film.
