I think that one thing that's important to mention is that most americans, and I use the term most is as general a form as possible, think that brostep is all there is to dubstep.. So when you try to tell them that there is a whole nother side to the scene they just laugh you off as not knowing anything

I've recently started saying "weird underground UK stuff" (I know, I sound a mad hipster  )

And then if they inquire further I'll name some artists.

if someone asks if i like dubstep, my new replies is "i like banana's"

usually changes the subject quick enough for me to not feel uncomfortable due to the fact i have to listen to someone cum themselves while reminiscing about the skrillex show they went to a few weeks before

Same, i always come across as some tnuc when people ask me what music i like.

This is how the conversation almost always goes.

me : urrr..... like electronic stuff
them: oh like Tiesto and Swedish House Mafia?
or
them: yeah sick, dubstep and that? Doctor P is playing Gatecrasher, you coming?

* at this point i feel like i should defend myself or forever be branded as someone who listens to Tiesto and Swedish House Mafia*

me : urrr no, probably best if you just send you some links online if you're that interested...
them: name some artists then... you like Pendulum? Deadmau5 is pretty sick too.

*and then i have to bust out the dickhead's classic*

me : nah, you've probably never heard of them.*i can guarantee they haven't, they're favourite music is Kasabian
them: try me, just name them.
me : *sigh* i really like [bust out any of the shit i listen to with the longest, strangest name]

And every time i feel like a "hipster" tnuc.

So now i figured out the best course of action to take is:

them: So what kind of music you listen to...
me : All sorts, you know...
them: Ok cool...

And if they ask for more info they aren't making small talk, they might want to actually know because they like music or whatever.

bandwagoner. didn't like it until it got progressive huh? no one sticks to the hungarian throat warbling roots nowadays, when the sound was deeper in the throat. nowadays it all just sounds the same: like high-pitched screaming

Whenever I miss delivery of a record, have to visit the post office the next morning on the way to work, I've always gotta sneak the records in with me when I get there, because guaranteed there's one goon who will come out with "What have you got there?" b2b "Bloody hell, didn't know they still made records. What is it?" b2b badgering me for long about what's the record is.
