Rastafarianism being a decentralised religion based on the individual and the notion of the divine within the individual and each individual on their own path? Dunno really though, I'm just suspicious of all religions. I'm probably getting it wrong and it's all to do with some notion individual empowerment as part of a group or something? Educate me

I dunno mate that's why I asked you

I agree with the religion thing though, although there are plenty of people that do good with it so no matter what I think of the method, if the ends is ok I can't complain.

Having said that, whilst I can sort of understand why people might follow the older religions, I do find the ones that have sprung up in the last few hundred years a bit strange, as they don't really have this excuse. Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, 7th day adventists and rastafarianism spring to mind and seem to be based on a completely different reading of other texts that are essentially light years removed from their original context which in turn were based on bad translations from the original languages, taken years after the event when the participants had died, parts edited out by the church for political reasons, and ultimately not tying in with historical accounts of the time (it's odd how outside of christian texts, there are various accounts of christians, but only a couple of anyone likely to be Jesus (one proven to be a forgery added by the Catholic church) and even then not as some miracle performing son of god, but as an insurrectionist.

I do feel that assuming Jah, God, Allah, Yahweh or whichever god is going to make the next life more bearable if you tolerate suffering in this one is probably one of the best forms of social control ever devised - and if you question it, there's always the "ah, but you have to have faith or you shall never find" line which will keep them looking for a saviour and stopping them from improving their lot in this life.

The pre-Island stuff (particularly the Black Ark recordings) is bad. Not sure about 'greatest', but it'd be wrong to put him down based on his subsequent career as an international pop star with reggae influences.

You're right, though - the way that his later albums are about the only thing anyone can name if you mention reggae despite actually being pretty tangential to what was actually going on in the dance is really annoying.

haha, that's not far from the truth. I always kinda sucked at the games that involved manipulating some kind of ball or other outside objects. With the exception of maybe basketball, every other "ball" sport I was horrible it.

I didn't make a half-bad wrestler, though :)

:wwf: <= +10pts for making this smilie relevant for once!
Word! Same here, I stunk at all ball sports but was a two time state qualifiying wrestler. :)

This thread has been returned, and we'd really like to see it remain on the forum in the interests of debate and discussion. A few points need to be stressed again so that we don't go up the same street we just came from.

Our rules don't just fly out the window because someone decides to create a thread called "Unpopular Opinions". Popularity or unpopularity doesn't mean that forum members will be allowed to use rude and demeaning gender references either. Even if it's meant in some dark humorous way, it's still not something we support as a forum, and never have, because the internet is often a place where things like that can be misunderstood or taken out of context.

There hadn't been one thread taken offline in here for months until recently. By the way some of you talk, it's as if 20 threads had been deleted this weekend. Chill out. We're not a firing squad and we don't sit around waiting to moderate. We like to remain out of threads, until the time requires that we step in. This thread was nearly at page 20 before any moderation occurred.
Our rules can change, and sometimes do change, but rather than be combative about getting your point across, how about making pro-active steps instead of re-active comments and smart remarks. You'll find that the moderators and admin's are willing to adapt, but throwing rocks or verbally antagonizing any one of us isn't exactly a move towards anything.
Peace,
Seckle
