So they attack Minarets instead and publicise it with a picture of the Swiss flag dotted with minarets and the sillouhette of a veiled woman looking oddly militant.

Nasty politics.

He came across as a total douche, I thought. I don't know a great deal about him, but I think he should thank his lucky stars that Hislop et al didn't have the knives out too badly, they could've given him a serious malling! He must be pretty confident in himself to go on and even more so to be interrupting with his own "jokes"...

He had one good come back though, id have to watch the show again though to find it.

Of course, the real story is neither pro not anti islam. The Swiss economy needs immigrants, that's not going to change, and no party is really going to stop immigration. Likewise no swiss party is really going to allow the immigrants to enjoy full rights; that would defeat the object of the immigration in the first place. So instead the debate is framed over this cultural issue, that allows both right and left wing to pose as representing important principles. Swizerland's capitalist economy is partly based on recruiting a steady supply of labour from outside of the cantons themselves; this is a country with a very high level of immigration and also some of the tightest citizenship rules. Swiss citizens have a high standard of living and entitlement to many social benefits - something that almost all immigrants are denied. So the economy gets workers, many of them skilled, without having to pay the full social benefits they would usually have to. It's how a lot of London and the south-east's economy works.
