I wouldn't mind if the people were actually good at making techno. as it stands, most of them suck at it.

RA review of the new Dusk & Blackdown sums up my thoughts pretty nicely: http://www.residentadvisor.net/review-v ... x?id=15841

Yeah TBH I liked steppenwolf remix when it debuted in that butterz guest mix but was not feeling it when I heard it in full. Like they said it sounds too fiddly. Lots of 130 is a little too afraid of just letting the tunes roll out, they have this weird deliberately non-rolling style to them like

KICK

*sound effect*

woooshhhh

*sound effect*

*grime sample*

bongo roll

bass notes

"yo yo pull up up pull up*

*jungle telephone*

weird sounding snare hidden away in non-obvious place in bar

like it's showing you each element separately or something. The Beneath stuff and the good wen, facta etc stuff is not like this, but a bit too much of the tunes are

it's all just a bit 'nothing'

what's the point if you just copy dubstep and grime and change the tempo a little bit?

Would you count someone such as Pearson Sound as making techno though? Cos he basically smashes every release. Guess you could say his stuff still falls under 'post dubstep' or 'bass music'.

This is totally true, especially compared to innovative genres like dnb that started 20 years ago with chopped up gritty drum breaks and wide eee-www-ooo basses, and now has evolved all the way to chopped up drum breaks and wide eee-www-ooo basses.

I think dnb has changed a lot

But even if you don't think so, they are still calling it dnb, it's not like they have changed the tempo slightly, taken all of the soul out of it, and tried to treat it like a new genre

it has to be said theres far more dnb/jungle being released at the moment with any innovative musical value than 130 even if 130 only has a small group of ppl contributing.
to be honest its more to do witht he creativity of the producers than the genre itself.
apart from a handful of 130 producers, none of them are making creative innovative music
whilst theres a lot of talented creative dnb producers at the mo

yes, Pearson Sound got it right. Same with the Livity Sound crew. Osiris, on the other hand, is a pristine example of techno gone bad.

as I said earlier, there is a lot of good stuff coming out from the "130" camp - and as with any genre, a lot of forgettable music aswell. the curious thing about the whole scene is how there aren't a lot of consistent producers, often following up a decent record with a dull one. many artists seem more concerned with getting their music pressed instead of worrying about quality control (of course, labels like Tempa signing subpar tunes left right and centre doesn't exactly help, either).

which 130 producers would you consider being creative? and who in drum'n'bass?

One label, Samurai, are more creative than the whole '130' genre imo

Samurai isn't very inventive though, they're mainly focusing on the sounds and style Autonomic brought up five years ago.

still 10 times more inventive than 130 stuff

Exit too, Civil stuff might not be considered dnb but it sort of is, Blu Mar Ten has been doing different stuff too, some Translation. It's not a fair comparison because there is way more dnb around
