name your two tracks and I can review them tomorrow.
dope, looking forward to hearing a final version :)

hmm, here's my 2 tracks, since u asked for them:

http://soundcloud.com/m4rs/m4rs-throw-the-water-on-em

http://soundcloud.com/m4rs/m4rs-hit-me

Cheers!!!
my comments on Hit Me - this is a great tune and to my ear would work really well on a dancefloor

+ starts really strong out of the gate!
+ nice flange / phase on the hats
+ great tension building into the first drop with the kick
+ brutal mid bass modulation, really heavy  :r:

- my ear would love to hear a tuned 808 kick layered with the existing kick to give it extra depth. here is what i do: low pass the 808 kick at 100Hz, high pass the existing kick at 100Hz, layer em, compress the shit out of it, resample and robert's ya fatha's bruva
- sub hard to hear - think it must be my system

amaaaaaaaazing! thanks a lot for ur input! ur right! i'm just working with an 808 kick like you said and the kick sounds MUCH better. the kick i had was high passed at around 70-75, so i'm not far off... but the 808 makes a big difference. and ur right, in Hit Me there's barely any sub bass, i usually take care of that last in my songs. Throw the Water on Em actually has some, but i guess it needs more  i'll keep u posted for final versions of each song.
thanks again for helping :) please stick around the forums, ur a great help haha!

WAG, here are my thoughts on Shotgun Beatdown

+ dancefloors love gunshots samples. can't explain it, they just do. 'spose it makes 'em feel all gangsturd
+ the vibe is great, reminds me of doing curb stomps in the original Gears of War :P:
+ love the variation in what is going on, the listeners perception is that nothing is repeating, everything is fresh as it happens, very rare in dubstep where it is so easy to copypasta rinse repeat
+ big ups for making a tune that pushes the envelope and is outside the normal template that alotta doobsteep falls into

- maybe bring up the mid bass and sub bass some, gotta have that whomp
- to my ear, i'd like to have the snare cut through a bit more. snare non-cut-through is an issue that me and my co-producer have dealt with for a long time. best thing we found was to layer a live snare sample, a short blast of white noise and a clap, compress it to hell and back, resample and use that. may or may not work for your ear, but at least something to consider...

ttytt, i kept getting distracted by going back to listen to the sick riff on Stained Sheets that comes in at 0:51 - that shit is CASH. would defo spin that if i had a 320 of the final :D

FILTH JUST STRAIGHT FUCKING FILTH. Well done good sir.

The pros:
+STRAIGHT FILTHY (I had to go take a shower after I heard this track)
+Wobble is fantastic, nice and chunky and good movement
+Sounds unlike anything else I have ever heard
+Drums are great, low-end bass works
+The ratchet is sick!
+Sample makes me want to go crazy and kill my Lee Ermy
+Breakdown is great
+Actually fuck it, all the mastering and mixing is perfect, except for...

Cons:
-...the wobble could maybe use a bit more low end?
-Track could use a bit more movement-- the bit in between the first and second drop is great but there's not a whole lot of progression

So what we have here is a track that is 99% finished and is definitely filthy enough to drop in a set. Only problem is that I would probably mix out of it after the first drop, because the bass gets a little bit grating by the second drop. Maybe mix up the drums a bit, or add a more powerful hi-hat pattern or something, but as crazy as the first drop is, if you can find a way to make the second drop that much crazier, this track will go from banger to set-maker.

Seriously, I fucking love it. Full Metal Jacket samples are generally over-used but the samples here work perfectly with the track and are practically unrecognizable, so good job there. Go sort out the second drop and I think this is release-worthy.

Also if you have a chance I would love some C&C on The Drug on the previous page. THANKS OP!

A lot of tracks for me to go at giving feedback, I'll try and get through as many as pos. tonight when it's more appropriate.

I can guarentee feedback on anyone giving some on my WIP, especially someone with a decent set of headphones to listen to it because I haven't yet.

Soundcloud

Personally I feel there's too much going on in the bassline, could quicken it up to and also add a touch of reverb. I'm happy with the intro before the first drop and especially happy with the outro but it's just the beginning. If you could comment on the soundcloud itself I'll be especially happy.

Cheers guys.

At J-Dot...

Errm, your drums sound nice, crisp and punchy... but the synth at the beginning is weird, and doesn't sound like it fits, not does it sound like its in time, it doesn't give the track that "groove" that most synths are supposed to... the bassline has waaaaay too much going on, strip it back to maybe just two parts, and go from there, i'd say use compression but thats probly an obvious one, strip it right back and start listening to it over again, I guess you wanted to beef it up as you were making it but at the mo, its too busy...

@Samian, yeah it's deffo too busy.

I was criticised for my tunes being too sparse but now I've made it too busy. Need to find the right balance.

It needs compressing yeah.

I need a decent set of headphones too cos making beats on my speakers is pissing people off.

Cheers for the feedback though.

NeonOrdnance wrote:So yeah, if the above message isn't painfully obvious, I'm going through a phase where I'm obessessed with track progression. The challenge I set out for myself with this track was to have it start out like an "ambient" or "liquid" track and by the end have it develop into more of a banger. I think I've mostly achieved that, if nothing else. I'm extremely lazy at mastering so keep in mind that the mix-down and mastering are not final, but if you give me any tips on that I would greatly appreciate it.

Oh, and the sample is an old interview with Peter Tosh, warped, screwed and pitch-shifted, and the voice saying "The Drug" is off an old news program on the evils of rave, ran through about 6 plugins, including reverb and distortion, and the echo is automated to cut out when the drop hits. Also this will be on the Into the Aether EP, along with Cowgate (on my sig) and a few other tracks that haven't been finalised yet. Aiming for a free release in March, so there will be much more hype next month (god damn I hate promoting). On to the tune:

NEON ORDNANCE: The Drug
Soundcloud
neon, sorry for the delay --> werk, what can you say :?

this is definitely a sick song :r: :r: :r:

+ nice techy intro, i like the slapback on the synth lead
+ vocal sample provides soild back drop to intro, sets the mood
+ love the bitcrushing(?) on the vocal sample
+ YES - love it when the half time goes to 4/4 at the end, so fucking awesome for the momentum of the tune, bangin!! this will totally get the floor moving! i totally wanted to hear at least another 8 bars of this part :5:

- maybe filth up the mid bass by FM'ing it a little? if you'd like, pm me and i can tell you how we do this in massive or FM8. also -- to the extent yr not doing it already - resample, resample, resample. it is like dual tracking guitars to get a fat sound when recording metal - just gotta do it!
- intro is so strong, made me want a face ripping first drop, maybe fill it out more?
- a lot melodic elements at the same time at 0:57, this is another thing me and my co-producer spend a lot of time debating ... it is tempting but ultimately not widely donein doobschtaap -- depends what you are after i 'spose

next time i'm going to go to officemax and buy like 10 different types of tape (scotch tape, duct tape, packing tape, for those in the UK some cellotape,,, etc) and record me ripping each type of tape from the spool, figure out which one is the dirt mcgurt,,, maybe dutty it up with a super short delay or flange or format or somin... then use that somehow as an incidental to the main beat...
