~ ISIS in control of 2 of Iraq's biggest cities

~ Were in control of Tikrit, not 200 km from Baghdad, and marching on the latter (although this is being debated with the Iraqi gov't saying they've reclaimed it.)

~ Looted a bank in Mosul of almost half a billion dollars (US)

~ Widely considered to be among the best trained, organized, & funded groups active in the region

~ Iran - a Shi'a country (ISIS are hardline Sunni) - has allegedly dispatched the Revolutionary Guard to fight against them... in Iraq.

~ Al Qaeda severed ties with them a couple months ago for being - get this - too extreme.

A good chunk of the insurgents we fought in Iraq were from Syria, we actually had incidents with their border guards and chased insurgents over the Syrian border a few times. (They used to cross at night fight in Iraq during the day) when I was stationed at Al Qaim.
When we were right on the Syrian border looking for Saddam to escape the actually motored/RPG'd the position of where our commo shelter was a day after we pulled out.
I'd be surprised if the US doesn't end up at war with them or Iran soon sadly.

Just a side note to this fiasco, I've heard that some Russian tanks and support vehicles rolled into Eastern Ukraine. I don't know if this is true.

But there is an axis that runs from Ukraine, through Syria, through Iraq. An axis of totally fucked up shit. And it also runs straight through Turkey. A very wide swath of the region is in deep conflict.
