as in pulse x isnt musically great but as a dance tune its nang for example. it doesnt have loads of complex rhythms and melodys and harmonies and stuff. its just good to dance to and fun.

I don't understand how music can be good but not "musically good"
DJoe wrote:it doesnt have loads of complex rhythms and melodys and harmonies and stuff. its just good to dance to and fun.
so "complex" = musically good even if it's a bit shit
can you have tunes that are musically good but actually shit?

but surely the point of music is to achieve an emotional reaction, not to be "complex" by some abstract measurement
so if it bangs, it's musically good. If it makes you cry it's also musically good.
w/e tbh

You're talking to dnb heads here, a fundamental distinction can be seen.

yeah i agree with that except id say if it bangs its good if it makes you cry its good
using pulse x as an example again it bangs its good. but i think youd struggle to persuade anyone that it took a musical genius to make it.

maybe that's us dealing with techno's stigma as dumb dance music.
music doesn't have to be complex or innovative to be good (and vice versa; just because something's innovative doesn't automatically mean it's good). as with a lot of things, different music has different purposes and qualities. I guess the key is to not simply distinguish between "good" and "bad" music, but to differentiate between "good electronic dance music" and "bad electronic dance music", "good classical music" and "bad classical music" etc. what good is it to try and formulate a certain set of values in order to categorise music when sonatas and technobelters have two completely different purposes? compare and judge within genres. and don't be afraid to admit liking "bad" music.
130 people I rate: Facta, Hodge, Beneath. Acre has a couple of really nice tunes. Etch has some sick beats aswell. Epoch is imho one of dubstep's finest producers at the moment.
