FWIW the approved reggae snob line on Bob Marley is that he was basically amazing but the post-1972 stuff (ie all the Island albums [edit: and, importantly, all the stuff that people who aren't reggae snobs have heard of]) is watered down for rock audiences, and although you kind of respect that stuff for what it is you only really like the early soundsystem era material - particularly the Lee Perry productions.

But yeah I agree with the point about just having the customary 5-6 tunes and not feeling the need to add more, happens with a lot of those older artists for me

Hmm not sure about that applying for me (typed in a room with 18 Black Sabbath albums next to me)

To be fair, I have a massive fetish for the Beatles and got nearly all their albums when they got remastered a few years ago; but other than Black Sabbath do you actually have loads of bands' entire discographies though? And also, Black Sabbath might not even be an "old artist" for you, maybe they released stuff when you were into their music?

For one they are an old artist.

Given that the last album they released was 1995 and I was born in 1989 and I only own two of the four of their 90s albums...

Plus I own all the doors albums. Most Groundhogs, a lot of Jethro Tull etc.

That's the start of the best sequence of songs ever put on record in my opinion, the middle section of Blonde on Blonde is mindblowing!

Visions Of Johanna -> One Of Us Must Know -> I Want You -> Stuck Inside Of Memphis With The Mobile Blues Again -> Leopard-Skin Pillbox Hat -> Just Like A Woman -> Most Likely You'll Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine

And then he goes and finishes with Sad Eyed Lady. BEST ALBUM EVER.

I used to think I didn't like Bob Dylan - always considered covers of his songs to be better than the originals (Hendrix' Rolling Stone and All Along The Watchtower are still tough to beat)... but I can actually pinpoint the moment - listening to It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry - when for some reason everything clicked into place, my brain exploded and I stopped being weirded out by his voice and just started appreciating the songs. He's incredible. Everyone I know "got it" with a different song though - getting into Dylan is like searching for the key to your soul.

Seeing him at Roskilde was a disappointment though. I'm glad I was drunk.

Totally agree. "Post Sicko-Cell" (I'm joking by the way) most of the music people seem to rave over has been so fucking dull. I agree about the Swamp 81 thing too, but maybe it's only so boring now because everybody else took it and ran with it.
