Fukushima operator pleads for international help as radiation crisis deepens

TEPCO, operator of the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, admits it needs overseas help to contain the radioactive fallout, after 18 months of trying to control it internally. It comes after the latest leak at the facility was deemed a “serious incident.”

"Many other countries outside of Japan have experienced decommissioning reactors, so we hope we can consult them more and utilize their experience,” TEPCO’s vice president, Zengo Aizawa, said at a news conference on Wednesday night.

"In that sense, we need support, not only from the Japanese government but from the international community to do this job."

The call comes after one of the 1,060 temporary tanks used to store highly contaminated water sprang a leak on Wednesday, discharging as much as 300 tons of radioactive liquid containing large amounts of cesium. Further tests revealed excessive radiation levels elsewhere in the facility.

Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) rated the incident 3 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale, which spans from 1 to 7.

"The current situation is at the point where more surveillance won't be enough to keep the accidents from happening," declared Shunichi Tanaka, chairman of the NRA.

The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said that it is “taking this matter seriously and remains ready to provide assistance on request."

In the past, Japan has been averse to letting foreign entities help with eradicating the nuclear fallout from the Tohoku Disaster of March 2011. The vast majority of clear-up tenders were won by local companies, and outside experts have observed from afar.

The leak is the latest - and most serious - in a string of accidents that have kept the station in the headlines throughout the summer.

http://rt.com/news/fukushima-interna...iaea-leak-866/

An expert on rt said this could be something similar to the china syndrome(watch the movie or google it) and this is going to be a global disaster soon, yet the press barely mentions it. We have to watch crap like snowden and manning wanting to become a female.

Something catastrophic is going on in japan and the west coast of the United states has already picked up the radiation.

We better hope this isn't the china syndrome. I thought nuclear war would be the reason our planet gets radiated globally but it seems a clean energy gone wrong is going to be the reason and they can't stop. They have lied time and again and continue to lie about the situation.

We are slowly entering the dawn of a nuclear disaster.
I really hope this is not the case.
By the sound of things though, shit is getting real up in here.

nuclear power prevents more deaths than it causes

http://cen.acs.org/articles/91/web/2013 ... auses.html

edit: this doesn't piss me off, its in response to eh and didi.

yes the fukushima disaster is terrible but the amount of lives saved/that will be saved by using nuclear power as opposed to fossil fuels is huge and more than makes up for the occasional disaster (if you look at it like a heartless bastard haha).

Also i don't think people would be this outraged if there wasnt a chance the radiation would come to america dont think anyone would really care if it was just gonna stay in japan.

On the back of this documentary

Police say a young woman photojournalist has been gang raped while her male colleague was tied up and beaten in India's business hub of Mumbai. The case was reminiscent of the December gang rape of a young university student in the Indian capital.

Police said the woman was on assignment to take pictures of an abandoned textile factory in south Mumbai late Thursday when five men confronted her, and offered to help her get permission to shoot inside the building. Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh told reporters that the men tied her colleague's hands with a belt while she was gang raped. The woman, reported to be in her early 20s, is in stable condition in hospital.

The assault comes amid heightened concerns about sexual violence in India.

Something needs to be done in the world to curb violence against women and children.

im a big fan of nuclear power, i never said i was against it.

yes but for different reasons. if it just stayed in japan that would give an indication of the size of the leak. if it's spreading to america and beyond it's really turning into a major global issue that should be getting more publicity than it is.

im ldn based so im not outraged the leak's reached america in and of itself

and i imagine RUSSIA TODAY feel the same

I am concerned for the people of Japan and the massive repercussions this could have on the planet's environment.
This really has nothing to do with the US for me.
