I can't imagine the pain of losing a child, but I know there's a point in any trauma where one has to move on instead of carrying their dead daughter on their back for the rest of their existence. You get the impression that 10 years ago they were a perfectly happy professional couple... over the course of 7 or 8 years they've descended to the nation's poster-family for self pity. She's gone.

Closure is a personal choice. I know it's a big deal to lose a child, but it strikes me that there's a decision to be made at some point or they just allow the kidnapper/murderer to ruin their entire lives rather than just create a bleak chapter. It's like an extreme version of that bloke in every friendship group who whines about his first girlfriend every time he has one too many gins.

At this point, no amount of 'searching' is going to find Maddy - it just serves to sell papers and prolong the agony for everyone involved. If she's alive and was traceable then she would've been traced by now; if she's dead then, as cold as it sounds... she's not worrying about them and they have other kids who's lives probably don't need to revolve around the tragedy of their sister. The ability to forget is an oft-misunderstood blessing.

I'd hate to be in charge of any investigation trying to find a kid, getting that balance of "making the public aware" and not making everyone so aware that the kidnapper is likely to kill the kid, if you get me. Like, I think in the case that she was "kidnapped to order" (not very believable imo), the amount of press coverage the case got made it very likely that rather than try and sell this now very hot and very public item, they just offed her and got rid of her. Like, if you're shipping the most looked for kid in the world around, you're gonna ask for a lot of money, probably too much money for it to be worth it to the buyer.

Were they found or did they escape and alert the authorities?

The recent ones I can think of, it wasn't police involvement that "found" them. It was the kidnappers getting lax and letting them escape. If someone's been missing for a decade, that and the kidnappers having a change of heart are really the only likely way they're going to turn up alive.

If Maddy turns up that way, it won't be because Kate McCann has done an interview with The Daily Express.
