Brought to you by YouTube Vlogger Alfie Deyes, The Pointless Book, accompanied by the free downloadable app, is the ultimate addition to his YouTube channel a weird & funny video-diary of fun, challenges and nothingness: bake a cake in a mug; take part in a people-watching challenge; create a time capsule; diarise a week of your life and learn to make origami. Fully illustrated and packed with a host of games, activities and pranks, Alfie invites you to join his online following as he challenges you to complete your journal of pointlessness and do virtually nothing with pride.

Fair play to him, but that synopsis doesn't sound like it's my sort of thing.

Nevertheless, respect :Q:

He's found a market and found a way to exploit it for a lot of money.

Fair play to him indeed.

Is putting "Jah" and "rastafari" samples in tunes at this point just stupid and cliche?

Both stupid and cliche, but don't mean it can't be a banger. Lion Charge!

It is if you really give that much of a fuck about what a tune should sound like.

I don't get why people use Jah samples and shit so much. Like you wouldn't put random samples about Jesus in your tunes when not religious thinking it sounds cool. It's like reggae gets a pass lyrically because it's made by dudes who smoke lots of weed when really the lyrical themes can be on a par with christian rock (I know it's also helped by pretty much all reggae not being on the unlistenably awful level of christian rock though)

Well it's why as a non Rastafarian I would feel like a fucking dick putting samples about Jah in my music constantly was the point, which was in fact the original point. I have no problem with religious lyrics I just find it weird that Rastafarian lryics seems to be thought as cool by people with absolutely no ties to it.

maybe because of the soundsystem culture that the music they make has strong ties to is why. uk dance musics always had strong ties to dub. and dub music is littered with it.
whats wrong with cultural appropriation. if it doesnt sound bad whats wrong with it?
you may feel like a dick but other people dont and i dont think its right to label them a dick for borrowing aspects of another type of music.
I really dont get why youd get so caught up about it. musics meant to be fun...

i don't think he's calling anyone a dick. it just seems a bit cheesy at times if i hear it in a tune by someone who is clearly not of jamaican descent and isn't rastafarian. it seems like they don't really know what "jah" or "sessalie" "zion" mean when they put those samples in their tunes. they're just using them because they've heard other people use them, not because they have any meaning behind them.

i've used jah samples myself, just check my sig. but it's only one tune. if i did that in every tune then that would be kind of a problem imo.

if i was making reggae/dub meant to be heard by a rastafarian audience, then that's one thing, but the music i'm making realistically isn't gonna be heard by (m)any rastafarians, and i'm not rastafarian myself so i can't really use those kinds of samples too often in good conscious.

if it was Mala using the samples then that's one thing, but like some dungeon producer? :6:

how is mala any different to a dungeon producer. hes not a rasta
'they're just using them because they've heard other people use them, not because they have any meaning behind them.
'
there you go they are using them because they heard other people use them and they think it sounds good. thats how music works lol

you're all looking too far into this.

can say the same thing for middle class white 130 producers using grime mc vocal snippets in their tunes
