I still think to original post should be edited to be a bit more broad and accessible to new listeners. I mean, it seems like a lot of people come in here and hear I Only Know and Qawwali then decide the whole thread's gonna be boring. Don't get me wrong, they're great tunes, but they're tunes most people are really only going to understand once they're already familiar with the sound. Sure, there's a lot of balance when you look at the thread as a whole but it seems like a lot of people just try to work their way through the first post. Half of the Youtube links in the OP are dead anyway, so how about replacing them with Request Line, Night, Haunted etc. as well as some more aggressive tunes by Vex'd, Distance, Jakes, Caspa & Rusko? Could also throw in some more commercial sounding stuff like Joker and Magnetic Man for a more complete idea of the genre.
Just a suggestion, but like half of the videos in the OP are just dead links taking up space anyway. I know that as much as I love Qawwali now, back when all I'd heard from dubstep was early UKF uploads, if I looked in this thread and heard it I wouldn't have been inspired to dig deeper. Reel them in with catchier shit and let them discover that stuff for themselves I reckon.
EDIT: come to think of it, this could pretty much be accomplished by taking a bunch of the other tunes posted on the first page and just moving them into the original post. Especially those Skream tracks

just got asked about this by badger, and yeah its a pretty fair cop man. When i first made this thread it was titled "actual, musical dubstep" or something along those lines. It was just a gut reaction to hearing an impossibly endless wall of 'music' that was kick, snare + bassline. Dubstep has always had so much more going for it in a real, musical sense, and I wanted to point that out.
Its since been renamed an introduction to dubstep though, so fair enough, those tunes dont really fit as well anymore. I really want to make sure its still musical stuff though. I dunno, like...summer dreams > filth.
But one thing isnt changing! Qawalli isnt going ANYWHERE

It is in my opinion the greatest thing ever done with electronic sound. A total, untouchable masterpiece...
that is all

i might do some editing myself!

I honestly think the best way to do it would be to have a mod-chosen panel of users give their top 5/10 tracks that typify to them what Dubstep is, rather than just let anyone and everyone pitch in with their spammy tunes.
It's not a strict rule base, just something that can say "Hey, these users know their stuff, see what dubstep is to them, then you're on your own from here".

THIS. Allow them to be drawn in with more accessible stuff first.
Although let's keep Qawwali right where it is

Peace to Sonika & Maccaveli, this idea is whack IMHO.
It's kind of like, rather than "What is Dubstep?" > "THIS IS DUBSTEP!", it's "What is Dubstep?" "This... sort of".
To me, they can either like the music or not, it doesn't bother me in the slightest if somebody hears Qawwali and sticks to their preferred sound. If they're on Dubstep Forum, odds are they've already been hooked by something, accessible or not.
My idea is still easily the best, and should be enacted immediately.

^haha but it's not as much "this is...sort of"
It's more like "here's one aspect of it, okay you like that let's travel deeper through many more aspects of it"
I'd argue that a few tunes can't completely sum up dubstep.
But I like your idea too gareth

Lol I'm not saying lets kick the thread off with Katy On A Mission, I'm talking about Request Line, Haunted etc. If we went through with your panel idea, those tunes would most likely end up there anyway. I mean, at the moment, "This... sort of" applies more to James Blake and Burial than what I'm suggesting

Lol I don't think anyone was suggesting that we put Katy On a Mission anywhere in this thread.
But yeah tunes like Request Line would be good to start off with

I think we basically need early skream, benga, dmz guys, pinch, kode9, skull disco stuff? All that jazz. I wouldnt have thought much from the early 00's, garage -> dubstep stuff. Thats more roots of dubstep no?

Aren't they the tracks that are already up there though? You can't just ignore tunes like Qawwali, the impact they had, etc. As I said, people either like it or they don't, no skin off my nose.

They're in the first few pages, but not many new people are gonna look past the first couple of posts. All I'm saying is, leave everything that's on the first post as is (except the dead links) but put about 5 or so classic but more accessible tunes like Request Line, Night, Root, etc. right at the top to draw in the people who might be put off checking the rest of the thread by James Blake and that

Yes ^
When I first checked out the "what is dubstep" thread, I was overwhelmed by the amount of links.
I think around 5 tunes (such as Qawwali, Anti War Dub, Night, Midnight Request Line, Goat Stare) should be in the first post with short descriptions for each tune
(I.e. "Night - a shuffled, sub heavy track that was the first ever dubstep tune to be played on the radio")
